Algieri can’t get prognosis on eye until swelling goes down

algieri422By Dan Ambrose: Newly crowned WBO light welterweight champion Chris Algieri (20-0, 8 KO’s) still doesn’t know the extent of the damage to his right eye due to the swelling on the eye. It’s hoped that there’s no internal damage to the eye so that he can return to the ring later on this year and take on one of the big names like Manny Pacquiao or Danny Garcia.

Those are the guys that Algieri’s promoter is targeting for his next fight. A rematch with Ruslan Provodnikov is the plan C or D backup if nothing else comes up. It’s not a great fight, because of Provodnikov’s lack of star appeal. Besides that, Algieri already beat Provodnikov and exposed him for being one-dimensional. Not much is going to change no matter how many times Algieri fights him.

“Chris Algieri says he can’t get a real prognosis on his right eye till the swelling goes down. Will see the doc tomorrow,” said Steve Kim on his twitter.

This would be a real disappointment for Algieri and for boxing fans if he needs to rest for 6 or more months to let his eye healed. Surgery would be a disaster because it would likely mean a long period out of the ring for Algieri, and perhaps tune-up bouts for him when he does eventually return. For him to get a big money fight against Pacquiao, he needs to heal quickly so that he can be available to fight him on November 22nd. That’s 5 months’ time before he would need to be back in the ring, but if his eye needs surgery, then he’ll likely need more than that for it to heal depending on the extent of the injury.

Algieri out-boxed Provodnikov last Saturday night in beating him by a 12 round split decision at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. After a rough 1st round which saw Algieri get knocked down twice by Provodnikov, Algieri settled down and out-boxed Provodnikov the rest of the way.
