Vetyeka vs. Donaire: is Nonito’s big left enough to beat Simpiwe?

donaire55By Gerardo Granados: Next May 31 at the Cotai Arena in Macao, China; Nonito Donaire will try to win his fourth divisional championship when he challenges WBA Super World “featherweight” champion Simpiwe Vetyeka. By the way have the reader noticed that in the same card Vic Darchinyan will challenge Nicholas Walters for the WBA World “featherweight” championship; not that it will surprise the reader but it is quite odd.

Once up on a time the former three division champion Nonito Donaire had bright future, but after been defeated by the current WBA – WBO super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux, things have not been as good as in the past. Nonito was awarded by several sites and sports media as the 2012 boxer of the year and it seemed like Donaire could keep on dominating his opponents for a long time but Rigondeaux not only out box him but also hurt him, not referring only that he wobbled him but also that he broke an orbital bone on his left side that was reinjured in his last bout.

Donaire is the former IBF – IBO flyweight champion, he won that belt back in 2007; then he moved up thru the weight divisions and claimed the WBC – WBO bantamweight and the WBO – IBF super bantamweight belts. Recently he stated that he wanted to go for more division belts, but will his big left be enough to achieve his goals?

In his last fight when Donaire fought against veteran Vic Darchinyan, he didn’t looked dominant at all and for me Darchinyan was ahead on the score cards by the time he got hammered with Nonito´s big left. But, how is it possible that a veteran Darchinyan moving up in weight was able to trouble him that much?

Simpiwe Vetyeka stopped veteran boxer Chris John to win the WBA Super World featherweight belt, and he might have done it because of his high motivation and strength; and not because he has elite boxing skills. It seems like Simpiwe has the perfect boxing style to make the old Donaire look good but I am not sure how Nonito will perform at the featherweight division or even if his big left is enough to defeat a motivated fighter. Donaire edges Vetyeka with speed, mobility and experience but you can never count out a hungry lion who has been inspired by a world icon in the name of Nelson Mandela.

This bout could be a make or break fight for the Filipino fighter who has a lot to lose if he can’t get pass thru the newly crowned champion who can bring a lot of attention to himself if he is able to defeat another big name of the boxing industry. Maybe the reader have a clear view of who can win this bout but I am having trouble deciding on who to place my bet, I think I will bet for the lion that can bring me the most profit coming the day of the fight. As for Nonito´s big left, do you think it will be enough to beat Simpiwe?
