thurman5By Allan Fox: WBA interim welterweight champion Keith Thurman (23-1, 21 KO’s) would like to get a fight against boxing’s biggest star Floyd Mayweather Jr. before he wraps up his career at some point, but Thurman doesn’t mind even if he doesn’t wind up facing him. Thurman sees himself as the next generation of boxing stars, and he feels he’ll be taking over once Mayweather retires.

“He don’t even know if he’s going to go three fights. I’ll say it again,” Thurman said. “The man [Mayweather] is getting older, and we about to tap into the next generation. Get ready for the next generation of boxing and it starts right here with One Time.”

Thurman seems a little annoyed that he’s not been mentioned by Mayweather as a potential opponent. Thurman has been knocking his opponents out left and right as of late, and looking very good. However, Thurman’s fight against Julio Diaz didn’t bring in big ratings for Showtime last month, and that’s not a good thing for Thurman. Mayweather isn’t going to fight someone who doesn’t bring in big ratings on regular Showtime, because that would be an indication that they’d bring nothing to the table as far as a pay-per-view buys.

Thurman needs a few big fights under his belt before he starts calling out Mayweather, because Julio Diaz and Jesus Soto Karass, the two best fighters on Thurman’s resume, aren’t big enough names for him to be trying to get a fight against Mayweather. Those are fighters that Thurman should have already fought in the past, but Golden Boy Promotions is still taking their time with Thurman for some reason. They plan on trying to step him up for the first time against Shawn Porter if they can get Porter to agree to take that fight.

Thurman might give Mayweather some problems if that fight were to be made, but not a ton of problems because Thurman isn’t in the same league as Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Mayweather easily beat Canelo.
