Robert Guerrero: I’m hungry and looking forward to Yoshihiro Kamegai challenge

guerrero4By Dan Ambrose: #9 WBO, #13 WBC Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (31-2-1, 18 KO’s) is looking forward to his ring return next month on June 21st against Yoshihiro Kamegai (24-1-1, 21 KO’s) in a fight that will be Guerrero’s first in over a year since his loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. Guerrero needs to get active again if he wants to be a major player in the welterweight division, because he’s wasted a lot of time that he could have utilized to get some important wins over top contenders.

“I’m excited to be making my ring return on June 21, especially for my fans in California,” Guerrero said. “I’m in great shape. I’m hungry and I’m looking forward to the challenge Kamegain presents. I have no doubt that I will be victorious in my return.”

Kamegai, 31, doesn’t have nearly the same amount of experience as Guerrero has going for him. Kamegai was beaten by Johan Perez by a 10 round decision loss last year in June in a fight that wasn’t even close. Perez was much better than Kamegai. The only other notable name on Kamegai’s resume is Jose Alfaro, who Kamegai stopped in the 6th round in 2010.

The Guerrero-Kamegai fight will be taking place on the same card as the Gary Russell Jr. vs. Vasyl Lomachenko and Devon Alexander vs. Jesus Soto Karass fights at the StubHub Center, in Carson, California, USA. It would be interesting to see if Guerrero can steal the show with his performance in his fight against Kamegai.

Guerrero has been out of the ring for so long that it’s hard to know how he’ll look. We know that Guerrero looked lost against Mayweather, and he seemed to stop trying to win after the first 4 rounds. Instead of applying aggressive pressure on Mayweather the way that Marcos Maidana did this month, Guerrero backed off and stayed on the outside for most of the fight.

With the amount of time that Guerrero has been inactive, he very well could lose against Kamegai. Guerrero didn’t beat anyone good to get the fight against Mayweather in the first place, as all he had to do was beat Andre Berto and Selcuk Aydin. Kamegai looks a lot better than those guys, and he punches really well.
