By Raj Parmar: Earlier today on his twitter account, former boxer and current Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya has stated that he has spent a lot of time watching Floyd Mayweather’s old fights and has come to the conclusion that Floyd should really be 43-3 instead of 46-0.
Oscar and Floyd have had bad blood between them ever since their 2007 mega fight, which Floyd won by split decision after a heated build-up which saw legitimate animosity develop between the two fighters. Oscar is likely affirming that he believes Floyd lost to himself, Jose Luis Castillo and last night’s match-up with Marcos Maidana.
De La Hoya said “I watched several fights again and Floyd should be 43-3 have a great Sunday. You never ever here Julio Cesar Chavez saying he’s the best ever, and he was 87-0 before he lost. You have to realize that records don’t mean anything in today’s world. Don’t forget Julio Cesar Chavez was 87-0 before he lost his first.”
Despite the arguments on whether Floyd lost those fights or not, it is very clear that Floyd is a person that Oscar spends a lot of time thinking about. De La Hoya and Mayweather were getting set for a rematch in 2008 where Oscar wanted badly to avenge his earlier loss to Floyd, however Floyd decided to retire at that time to take a break from the sport. It seems that Oscar’s itch to see Mayweather lose his undefeated streak did not go away over the next few years which saw Floyd rack up win after win for record high paydays.
In Floyd’s past few fights, De La Hoya has been vocal about his belief that Mayweather is very beatable and feels that his fight with Floyd laid down the blueprint in defeating Mayweather. Oscar notoriously assisted Ricky Hatton, Victor Ortiz and Saul Alvarez in their preparations for Mayweather by giving them tips on how to get past Floyd’s vaunted defense.
The eagerness of Oscar to see Mayweather finally lose has not gone unnoticed by Floyd, as Mayweather rarely holds back at any chance to poke fun at Oscar when the opportunity presents itself. The feud between them have gotten very personal at times with Mayweather even making jokes about Oscar’s destructive drug habit that forced him into rehab, which Floyd thereafter apologized for.
Oscar now has just recently come out of rehab with a renewed focus on being positive and being strong spiritually as he attempts to lead Golden Boy Promotions into the future; however it will be hard for him to fully become a new man if he continuously has negative thoughts about Mayweather clouding over him. Floyd stated during the “All Access” series for his fight with Alvarez last year that Oscar is undoubtedly jealous of him, and with the way Oscar has continuously negatively commented on Floyd’s performances it would be hard to argue that fact.
