Mayweather Sr: Maidana doesn’t deserve a rematch

may88By Chris Williams: Trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. wasn’t happy with all the fouling that Marcos Maidana (35-4, 31 KO’s) got away with last Saturday night against his son Floyd Mayweather Jr (46-0, 26 KO’s) in their fight in Las Vegas, Nevada. Floyd Sr. thinks that Maidana came into the fight with an MMA type game, and used that approach to try and beat Mayweather Jr. For that reason, Floyd Sr. doesn’t think Maidana deserves a rematch with Mayweather Jr.

Floyd Sr thinks Maidana used various rough-house tactics such as kneeing, rabbit punches, low blows, head-butts and holding and hitting to gain an edge against Mayweather Jr. in their fight.

“If I was Floyd, I wouldn’t fight him again,” Floyd Sr. told Hustleboss. “It was a superb fighter [Mayweather] against an MMA fighter [Maidana]. He hit him in the balls. He hit him on the hip. He hit him with his head. [He] butted his eye. Maidana don’t deserve a rematch.”

I agree with Floyd Sr. about Maidana not deserving a rematch. Maidana fought as well as he could in an anything goes type of approach to the bout, but at the end of the day, he still lost the fight to Mayweather. And this was with Mayweather fighting Maidana’s fight, giving him every advantage that he could to make it an even playing field. Even with Mayweather giving Maidana a chance to win, he still couldn’t get the job done. Maidana gave it his best shot, but he lost and that’s the end of the story. Mayweather suffered a bad cut in the 4th round from a head clash with Maidana, and that cut will need to heal in the next 4 months for Mayweather to be ready to fight in September. Mayweather can’t be fighting guys that are using rough house tactics like Maidana used, because it could throw off his schedule due to the injuries that might result.

Mayweather should move on to bigger and better things instead of getting caught in the rematch cycle that we see from other fighters. The interest that there was in this fight probably won’t be there in a rematch anyway, so Mayweather needs to keep moving forward with his career instead of staying in one place and giving guys he already beat a rematch.

Mayweather can get bigger fights against Miguel Cotto and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez next, and those guys bring in a lot of fans. Either of those guys would be perfect for Mayweather in order to maximize his PPV numbers. The only way Mayweather shouldn’t fight one of those guys is if they both lose their next fights. Canelo has a fight against Erislandy Lara on July 12th, Cotto goes up against Sergio Martinez on June 7th.
