Mayweather should forget about Maidana rematch

floyd8822By Chris Williams: WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr’s recent win over Marcos Maidana (35-4, 31 KO’s) was a costly one for him, because he suffered a cut over his right eye after a head clash early in the fight. The cut will take time to heal, and there’s a good chance that it’ll open up as soon as Mayweather takes a hard shot on that eye in his next fight in September.

Mayweather’s father thinks it’s just not worth it for him to fight Maidana again because of the fouling that he might do. Floyd Sr. feels that Maidana plays it too rough when he fights, and it’s not worth the trouble to fight him because of the way he bends the rules.

There are rumors that the Mayweather-Maidana fight brought in less than 900,000 pay-per-view buys. It’s still at the rumor stage, but if the fight does come in under 1 million PPV buys, then that’s another reason why Mayweather needs to move on and look for another name. If the boxing public wasn’t excited about a Mayweather-Maidana fight the first time, then you can’t expect for them to suddenly get interested in a second fight between them even though their fight was a competitive one for 12 rounds.

I’m sure Mayweather would like to fight Maidana a second time for personal reasons in order to fight in his normal style for the rematch, and clown him for 12 rounds. There’s no doubt that Mayweather would make Maidana look bad in a rematch, but he needs to look sat this from a mature perspective. The rematch isn’t worth it if the numbers aren’t there for the fight. Mayweather needs to fight the guys that will bring in the biggest PPV numbers possible, and Maidana won’t be able to do that. At best, we’re maybe talking about a fight that will bring in 1 million buys, but Mayweather can do much better if he were to fight the likes of Miguel Cotto, Sergio Martinez or Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

What Mayweather doesn’t need is for him to take a second fight with Maidana and end up with another cut or two that could get in the way of bigger fights for him. If the fan interest isn’t there for a second fight between them, then why waste time with all the likely headaches Mayweather will be going through in fighting Maidana again? For all we know, Mayweather will get cut again and may end up having to wait 6 months for the cut to heal. It’s not worth it.
