Mayweather should face only unbeaten fighters for the remainder of his career

may95By Chris Williams: Floyd Mayweather Jr. (46-0, 26 KO’s) is at the point in his career where he no longer needs to waste his time fighting opposition that have already been exposed by other fighters in the past, as there’s no gain for him. Mayweather should focus entirely on legacy building fights against the unbeaten fighters in the welterweight and junior middleweight divisions rather than wasting time on guys that will give him nothing.

Mayweather’s father Floyd Sr. doesn’t want him to bother giving Marcos Maidana a rematch because of the fouling that Maidana did in the fight. Floyd Sr. is right, but not just because of the fouling. Maidana has already been beaten 4 times in his career, so there’s no real upside in Mayweather fighting him again, because he already beaten him once and three other guys did it as well.

Here are the fighters that Mayweather needs to pick from for his last three fights of his career:

Keith Thurman

Shawn Porter

Demetrius Andrade

Peter Quillin

Kell Brook

Danny Garcia

All of these fighters are unbeaten at this point, and those are the type of fighters that will help build Mayweather’s legacy, not guys that were already exposed over and over again. I’m sorry, but Manny Pacquiao has already lost so he doesn’t make the list. The same goes for Miguel Cotto, Sergio Martinez, Amir Khan, Lamont Peterson, Devon Alexander and Lucas Matthysse. Those are all fine fighters, but they don’t have the perfect record and that removes them from Mayweather’s list. We could see either Porter or Brook falling out of the list depending on what happens with their upcoming fight in July.

Mayweather has achieving incredible things with his career, and he needs to keep his standards up by only facing the finest. If this was a wine selection or a car selection, Mayweather would only want the very best of those two things. The same applies to his career. He should only be facing opposition with perfect records from here on out.
