Mayweather needs a new opponent for his next fight on September 13th

By Yannis Mihanos: This September 13th is the great Mexican Independence Day, a day that is special for the Mexican boxing fans. Floyd Mayweather Jr. will be fighting on that date, but likely not with a Mexican warrior. It’ll no doubt be someone high in the rankings of boxing but not necessarily the best. Since Manny Pacquiao is excluded from the list for several of reasons, let’s move on with what is left for Floyd.

A completely new opponent for Mayweather along with some good publicity could bring in high pay-per-view numbers for his next fight on September 13th. So let’s examine here the options:

There are several candidates for this position such as Danny Garcia. He’s still unbeaten and pretty solid, even if his last fight against Mauricio Herrera was a complete disappointment. Garcia is still has the credentials and he is a Latino something that the Spanish speaking fans will appreciate a lot.

Marcos Maidana has lost a lot of ground for that position, not because he didn’t convince the audience but because he proved to be a too much to handle opponent. Mayweather also suffered a cut with Maidana’s unconventional methods after getting hit with a head-butt.

Amir Khan (32-3 defeats) appears once again as a candidate but even this time I don’t believe that Floyd will select the 27-year-old Khan. His appeal to the American and Spanish crowd is pretty weak.

WBA interim welterweight champion Keith Thurman is an opponent that Floyd might like. Thurman is undefeated with some raw power but still inexperienced for the big stage like Saul “Canelo” Alvarez was.

Another potential opponent is Shawn Porter. He is the unbeaten IBF welterweight champion with a 25-0 record. Porter causes mayhem in each fight he is involved with, and in his last fight he knocked Paulie Malignaggi and may have ended his career. Porter is very uncontrollable in the ring and I think like with the fight against Marcos Maidana , Mayweather will experience many problems.

If it was me, I would pick Shawn Porter to fight Mayweather, as I believe he has the biggest chance for an upset. If Floyd decides to go safe I think he will pick probably Amir Khan. There are still some other options to consider but these are my top best.

So what is it going to be for Floyd? Playing it again safe? Going for the kill with a Dangerous one? Fighting someone with a Latin name and heritage?

Anything is possible, it depends on what Floyd has in mind…
