Mayweather won the fight via majority decision (117-111, 116-112, 114-114), but Maidana clearly proved that Floyd Mayweather Jr. is not invincible anymore.

Prior to the fight, I typed up my final analysis. I never make actual predictions because I never want to be disrespectful to any fighter. Plus, I have been watching Boxing way too long to know a simple truth, you just never know what is going on inside a fighter’s head prior to a fight. That being said, I was very surprised at Floyd Mayweather’s approach to this fight, especially the first half of the fight. Instead of moving laterally, he stayed in front of Maidana and wanted to exchange.

Even worse, he was on the ropes way too much. I had said that Floyd never let’s his opponent utilize their strengths. Last night I was wrong. During the post fight press conference, Floyd Jr. admitted that his father provided him with a great game play, and a different strategy. But, Floyd Jr. for whatever reason decided to go with a different game plan that actual benefited his opponent. And, what can you say about Trainer Robert Garcia? For all those who think a great trainer cannot make a difference in a veteran fighters career, Garcia proved why he is hands down the best trainer in Boxing today.

I am aware that fans will highly debate this fight. It was a very close fight. Scores for Floyd of 117 and 116 were way too thigh high for me. Personally, I had it a draw, six rounds a piece. Showtime’s Al Bernstein and Pauly Malignaggi, two of the most honest and sincere guys in the sport of Boxing that you will ever meet both had the fight 115-114 for Mayweather. Steve Farhood from Showtime also had it for Mayweather, 115-113.

All of that being said, whether you are a solid Mayweather fan, or a solid Maidana fan, I will help you both out because I am unbiased, especially when it comes to judging, this was a very close fight. Floyd has not had a close fight like this in a long time. His fight with Miguel Cotto was not a close fight. People forget that point because Floyd got a nose bleed, but he only lost 2 to 3 rounds that fight on all three judges scorecards.

Marcos Maidana may have lost his WBA Welterweight Title, but as I have been talking to fans, he has gained a ton of respect and admiration, even from Mayweather fans. Amir Khan (29-3) has been mentioned as Floyd’s next possible opponent. To Khan’s credit, he beat a tough veteran in Luis Collazo (35-6) in the co-main event last night via 12 unanimous d ecision. However, beating Luis Collazo should not equate to a Mayweather fight. Also, Amir will not fight in September anyway due to his religious beliefs. He stated such at the post fight press conference.

Due to the competitiveness of this fight, I believe Marcos Maidana definitely deserves a rematch. Think about it, Maidana only made $1.5 million this fight, and Floyd made over $30 million guaranteed. Regardless of the millions, Maidana did one thing money cannot buy, he proved that Floyd Mayweather is not invincible. God Bless!
