By Idris Morrey: Its been rough but welterweight is no more a competitive weight class for Floyd Mayweather Jr. (46-0, 26 KO’s) to keep looking for best match ups. He has fought virtually every star in this division leaving no doubt that he is untouchable at this level.
At middleweight, Floyd is not guaranteed a smooth sail and he should be ready for a few losses in case he considers the shift. After his debut at welterweight where he first faced Zab Judah, Mayweather seem to lose the punching power he once was known for. He has grown to become a fighter and a promoter with highest grossing matches despite not scoring knockouts lately.
Nonetheless, Floyd may not look foreign in that division having faced Oscar Dela Hoya , Canelo Alvarez and Miguel Cotto at junior Middleweight where he outclassed all of them. Cotto (38-4, 31 KO’s) is scheduled to face WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (51-2-2, 28 KO’s) on June 7th. The match is expected to produce a potential candidate for a Mayweather face off.
With September fast approaching and there standing a slim chance of Cotto ever getting a rematch with Mayweather at any level, Sergio Martinez could be a good starter for Floyd at middleweight. The number five pound for pound best boxer poses a real challenge for anyone having won seven of his last fights with four via KO. He sits comfortably at the top of this division and is a threat to Mayweathers long running unbeaten record.
Besides Martinez, the undefeated Gennady Golovkin could be a good challenger for Mayweather. I know Floyd is always looking for his highest payday and a tough competitor and this can happen when two undefeated champions meet. Golovkin is a Knockout artist with a percentage of 89.65% exceeding that of Maidana though they are at different levels. Just like Floyd, competitors have also been unable to knockout or knockdown this guy. What else do fans want other than two undefeated champions, same Quality of skill and heart coming together to try and poke a hole in each others flawless records.
Moving up the ladder will not be as risky for Floyd as most analyst would have it. Most of his sparring partners like J’ Leon Love, are up coming middleweight threats.
I acknowledge the Competitiveness at welterweight Right now but non can bring Floyd the kind of money and offensiveness that middleweight posses right now. While every Welterweight is calling him out, he should thank them and tell them to look elsewhere since he wants to be a six division world champion.
