floyd13By Dan Amnbrose: WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (46-0, 26 KO’s) defeated WBA welterweight champion Marcos Maidana (35-4, 31 KO’s) by a controversial 12 round majority decision tonight in a decision that was loudly booed by the crowd at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. The final judges’ scores were 114-114, 117-111, and 116-112. I scored the fight 7 rounds to 5 for Maidana. I had definitely had Maidana winning the fight. I had Maidana winning rounds 1, 3, 4, 5, 8, 11 and 12.

Mayweather was throwing too many single punch counters, and Maidana was walking through those shots to nail Mayweather with hard body shots against the ropes. Mayweather was forced to hold through most of the fight in order to stop Maidana’s superior inside attack. Mayweather tried his check left hook that he’d knocked Ricky Hatton out years ago, but it had no effect on Maidana, who waked through the shot and kept firing away with body shots.

When Mayweather would cover up, Maidana would nailed him with looping punches to the back of the head. The referee Tony Weeks should have taken points away from Mayweather for the constant holding in the fight because he holding at least 10 times per round, and it took away from the fight due to it being excessive.

Mayweather struggled with the constant attacks from Maidana until the 9th and 10th rounds, in which Mayweather fought well, and was able to hit Maidana with some clean shots. However, Maidana came on strong in the 11th and 12th rounds to dominate a tired looking Mayweather, who held constantly while backed against the ropes.

“I gave a fight that the people wanted to see,” Mayweather said after the fight. “If the fans want to see it again, we’ll do it again.”

The booing from the crowd made it clear that fans saw Maidana as the winner of the fight, and Mayweather had to know that he didn’t prove that he was better than Maidana.

Maidana said “I definitely felt like I won the fight. Floyd didn’t fight like a man. I have to give him a rematch because I won the fight. I’ll give him a rematch.”

Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer said “Let’s do it again.”

It was surprising that Schaefer didn’t push for Mayweather to fight Amir Khan next, but Khan’s performance earlier tonight failed to excite the Las Vegas crowd dude to the movement he used and the holding.
