By Daniel Hughes: The boxing family lost another great son today with the passing of Matthew Saad Muhammad (49-16-3, 35 KO’s) at the young age of 59. A real warrior whose life was a fight from start to finish. Born Maxwell Loach and grew up on the tough streets of Philadelphia a real life fight story unfolded the stuff of movie legends, fictional or real get produced.

To watch him fight fans were never shortchanged exciting fights were mandatory not given when watching MSM a really entertaining fighter. The UK fight fan in me one of the earliest memories I have is of him beating John Conteh a great fighter from these shores. Be under no illusion to beat him a second time a great achievement on its own. The man’s fight record speaks for itself. He came to fight, win or lose. Records are for DJ’s is the saying that springs to mind. He was a much underrated fighter, and he also beat the tough Yaqui Lopez twice. The wars with Marvin Johnson among many entertaining fights well worth viewing. His resume set in stone.

Matthew Saad Muhammad inducted into the boxing hall of fame the man has passed sadly, to the younger fans out there his fight against Lopez in 1980 was named ring fight of the year.

Lopez dominated the fight first half landing 20 consecutive blows in the 8th round the wake up call and rally he often needed he stopped Lopez in the 14th round. He was given the name ‘Miracle Matthew’ a real life Rocky story no doubt about that.
