Marquez conquers Alvarado, but Pacquiao might be too much for him now

marquez6By Alon Calinao Dy: Juan Manuel Marquez (56-7-1, 40 KO’s) fought a very hard battle against the brawler but slower Mike Alvarado in a 12 round fight. The veteran Marquez won via unanimous decision over Alvarado for WBO welterweight eliminator at the Forum in Inglewood, California, USA.

All three judges were in favor of Marquez with the scorecards of 117-109, 117-109, and 119-109 since Marquez was throwing lots of punches and much busier than Alvarado. Marquez dropped Alvarado in round 8, but Alvarado returned the favor by knocking Marquez down in the following round.

After their exciting fight, Marquez fans were really worried about their national pride if he could beat Manny Pacquiao once again. As we could see in this fight, Marquez was way past his prime since he did not stop Alvarado when he had many chances to do so. I guess the stronger and quicker Pacquiao will certainly hurt Marquez. For sure, this would make a dangerous fight for the Mexican icon if he goes for a fifth time. I don’t think this is a good idea for Marquez’s camp to go after Pacquiao.

In a post conference, Marquez told that it was a huge challenge for him, and that age did not affect him at all as long as you took good care of yourself. But, of course, age does really matter for me. I’ve observed a slower Marquez compared his previous fights against the Filipino boxing champ. Then he was asked if he was going for a fifth bout against his long-time rival Pacquiao, he said “I’m going to go home and talk to my family about it. I’m not thinking about a 5th fight right now. I’m going to go home and think.” If I were Marquez, he should think twice before accepting the offer to fight Pacquiao. If he goes for it, I think this will be the end of his career like what Pacquiao did to Ricky Hatton.

Again, I’m right with my prediction that Marquez is going to win this war because I know Marquez has the ring experience and has been through lots of punishment before. At the moment, I don’t think he is going to be victorious against Pacquiao.

Indeed, even Marquez fans, have said from different boxing forums that it would be hard for Marquez to capture a WBO welterweight belt. Thus, his long-time dream to be a champion in 5 different weight divisions would be impossible to attain if he attempts to fight Pacquiao for a fifth time. That’s why I doubt it’s a good idea for team Marquez to challenge Pacquiao for his crown since age is affecting his performance, which I believe a normal phenomenon that everyone is experiencing through time.
