marquez999By Yannis Mihanos: This last Saturday night, 2 brawlers Juan Manuel Marquez (56-7-1, 40 KO’s) and Marc Alvarado (34-3, 23 KO’s) gave fans all the entertainment that a boxing fan could hope for in their fight at the Forum in Inglewood, California. There were 2 stunning knockdowns (one for each fighter) and many wild hurtful punches. The end result was a 12 round unanimous decision victory for Marquez.

The 40-year-old Marquez won the fight fair and square as he was clearly the better man, and the one who inflicted the most damage. One look at the face of Alvarado after the fight told the whole story. Alvarado’s face was cut up and badly swollen. Marquez was clearly one class above warrior Alvarado.

Alvarado had his moments too in the fight, especially in the 9th round where he produced a knockout after catching Marquez with a right hand to the head. Alvarado also kept coming forwards throughout the match and forcing Marquez to fight hard. But this tactic backfired, because Marquez was just too much for him to handle.

If you fight Marquez like Alvarado did last night then you can expect to be punished. Alvarado also didn’t have the hand and foot movement, and he was caught countless times by Marquez with all kinds of combinations. I am even surprised that Alvarado was a able to go the distance considering the damage in his left eye.

The result of the match was expected with Marquez winning a wide unanimous decision. So now what’s next for the legendary Mexican? A 5th fight with Manny Pacquiao?

After the fight last night, Marquez avoided to giving a definitive yes answer when questioned by Max Kellerman of HBO about a possible 5th fight against Pacquiao. Marquez first said he has to think it through with his family. Well, there is not very much to think of, because Marquez hasn’t got a title anymore. Pacquiao is the one with a title.

Marquez wants to win a 5th division world title before he retires from the sport. That would be a terrific feat for the ageless Mexican if he could accomplish that. And I think this is a great goal for Marquez, and of course the money that he’d receiver for a 5th fight with Pacquiao also has to be an attraction.

In the following days/month, Marquez will reveal what he’ll be doing with his future in the ring. But I think now is the perfect time for Marquez to agree to a 5th fight against Pacquiao.
