Manny Pacquiao has no chance against Floyd Mayweather Jr.

pac999By John Kelvin: In the wake of the Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Marcos Maidana fight last Saturday, there were revived calls from the fans and media for a Manny Pacquiao show down. Many people seem to think that Mayweather was exposed against Maidana and that Pacquiao will easily defeat him due to the aggressive style he shares with Maidana. This is hard to understand. In the fight, Maidana won no more than 3 rounds and very rarely landed any clean or effective punches.

For all of Maidana’s power and aggression he was unable to visibly hurt Mayweather once. When people see someone crowding Mayweather and flailing with wild punches they seem to give them more credit than is warranted. Evey time Maidana had Mayweather on the ropes he landed few clean shots with the exception of an overhand right in the first round. People have also overlooked the fact that Mayweather was countering off the ropes and was smothering Maidana’s work. Maidana fought a good fight but i don’t think it was enough to earn a draw or even more bizarrely a win which some people are claiming. Mayweather decided to do more fighting than boxing and won clearly, Maidana was not robbed in anyway.

Now that people feel that Mayweather has declined they think that Pacquiao will easily defeat him and that Floyd will continue to avoid him. In December 2012, Manny Pacquiao was knocked out with one punch by Juan Manuel Marquez which resulted in many fans and members of the media calling for him to retire. They said that if he came back he would be damaged goods and would be unable to compete at such a high level again. In Pacquiao’s two fights since that night he has won two decisions against Brandon Rios and Timothy Bradley. Both are good boxers but Rios is really a lightweight and if Bradley boxed the way he should have against Pacquiao he would have won. When Pacquiao boxes it is clear that he was visibly declined both in terms of speed and his power punching abilities.

Pacquiao hasn’t stopped an opponent in 5 years but somehow people believe that he will knockout Mayweather. He is no longer the all action fighter of  the past and instead relies on his boxing ability to win fights and to perhaps avoid being stopped again. In short, he is not an aggressive boxer in the way that Maidana is. Do people really think that he is going to defeat Mayweather by out boxing him? Even if he was still an aggressive fighter, his struggles against skilled boxers like Eric Morales and Juan Manuel Marquez give an idea of how he would fare if he were to face Floyd. Mayweather would defeat any version of Manny Pacquiao. Most people know this but don’t won’t to admit it.
