Maidana likely to get Mayweather rematch

may300By Dan Ambrose: Marcos Maidana (35-4, 31 KO’s) could win the Mayweather sweepstakes for a second straight time as Floyd Mayweather Sr. is saying that Floyd Jr. told him that he wants the rematch with Maidana next September. Floyd Sr. wants to try and convince him that he’s better off facing someone else for his next fight, because Maidana’s fouling makes him someone who’s not a good opponent for a second fight.

Floyd Sr. thinks there was way too much fouling from Maidana in their previous fight for him to get a second crack at Mayweather.

“Floyd told me he wants to do it again,” Mayweather Sr. said. “But I already told him I don’t think he should do it. The guy’s nothing but an MMA fighter. He’s twisting your arm, pushing you out of the ring, hitting you behind the head, hitting you below the belt, butting you in the head. That’s not boxing.”

To be sure, it’s difficult to look good against a fighter who is willing to go to any lengths to try and get a victory. It was definitely a physical fight on the part of Maidana, and you could see from the 1st round that he was willing to go to any lengths to try and get the win.

Mayweather could have taken the action to center ring and played matador for 12 rounds, and he could have saved himself a lot of trouble. Maidana wouldn’t have landed his low blows and rabbit punches, and he also wouldn’t have been able to hold and hit. Mayweather decided to fight Maidana’s fight, and when he made that decision, he put himself in harm’s way for Maidana’s roughhouse tactics in the fight.

A rematch would be good if there’s no other options for Mayweather to fight as far as opposition that will bring in more PPV buys. Now that Manny Pacquiao has signed himself out of the equation permanently by extending his contract until essentially the end of his career with Top Rank, we can’t hope for Pacquiao to fight Mayweather next. Shawn Porter and Keith Thurman bring in nothing because they’re not popular fighters.

Amir Khan still hasn’t faced a good opponent since his loss to Danny Garcia, and it doesn’t look like he’s going to be facing a good one anytime soon. Danny Garcia is a decent option, but he was kind of exposed in his last fight against Mauricio Herrera in getting a gift decision. Garcia still has unfinished business with Herrera, and besides that, he didn’t look good against Lucas Matthysse.
