Khan doubts Brook will take Shawn Porter fight

brook324By Scott Gilfoid: Amir Khan (29-3, 19 KO’s) says he’d like to fight the winner of the possible July fight between IBF welterweight champion Shawn Porter (24-0-1, 15 KO’s) and Kell Brook (32-0, 22 KO’s) next, but Khan doesn’t think that fight will happen, according to the Daily Star. Khan sees Brook ducking out of that fight due to the risk involved in facing Porter.

Khan will likely be steered around the winner of the Brook-Porter fight, and, yes, that fight will take place. Brook pretty much has no other choice but to take on Porter because he’s not going to get a shot at the WBA/WBC champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. and definitely not against WBO champion Manny Pacquiao. Neither of those huge stars are going to burn up a valuable fight against a guy that the American boxing fans have never heard of or seen before in Brook.

Hearn should have been staging Brook’s fights in the U.S since started promoting him, because it would have at least given Brook a sliver of a chance at getting a Mayweather and/or Pacquiao fight, but that’s not going to happen with fans in the U.S unaware of who Brook is.

Golden Boy Promotions will clearly match Khan against either Devon Alexander or Robert Guerrero next. Those guys can’t punch and they’re no threat to beating Khan, especially with his new fighting style that involves a lot of pulling down on his opponent’s head.

Brook is really going to be up against it against Porter. This is a fight where Brook is going to be taking a monstrous step up in competition from the 3rd tier fodder that Hearn has been feeding him to a good B level fighter. Porter isn’t an A-level guy, but he’s far ahead of the awful opposition that Brook has been fed his entire career that it’s not even funny. It’s too bad that Hearn doesn’t have a year or two to get Brook ready for the Porter fight by building him up to the fight the proper way by matching Brook against increasingly better fighters. I mean, it’s going to be next to impossible for Brook to compete against Porter with Brook going from facing the likes of Matthew Hatton and Alvaro Robles to facing a talent like Porter. Brook is being set up to fail due to his poor preparation for the Porter fight. After Brook loses this fight, I hope for his sake that Hearn figures out that he needs to build Brook up slowly before he puts him in with guys like Porter.
