By Scott Gilfoid: Mikkel Kessler (46-3, 35 KO’s) shot out a tweet today hinting that he wants to fight IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch (32-2, 23 KO’s) in a third fight between them if Froch can get past George Groves (19-1, 15 KO’s) in their rematch on May 31st at the Wembley Stadium in London, UK. Kessler hasn’t fought since his 12 round unanimous decision loss to Froch last year in May, but it looks like he’s finally decided to get back in the ring after all this time. Kessler said he’ll be at the Froch-Groves 2 fight.

If Kessler had acted sooner after his loss to Froch last year, he would have very likely gotten an immediate rematch straight away, because Froch’s promoter Eddie Hearn was talking 24/7 about wanting to put an immediate rematch together between the two fighters due to the tremendous amount of interest there had been between the two fighters, but Kessler didn’t speak up, so Hearn had Froch move on and face Groves in what was by far a more exciting fight last November.

At this point I don’t see how Hearn could sell a third fight between Froch and Kessler without Kessler having fought since his mostly uninspired loss to Froch last year. I’m sure some boxing fans would go for the idea of seeing them fight without Kessler having done anything in over a year, but I wouldn’t want to see it. The fight would look too much like a money grab to me. In other words, a cash out fight for Kessler.

To make the fight seem more real in the eyes of fans, Kessler really should get in the ring and start fighting some of the top contenders to show that he’s not a washed up fighter. I mean, Kessler should take on a talent like Andre Dirrell or Anthony Dirrell to show that he’s for real. The Dirrell brothers would jump at the chance to fight Kessler, and it would give him an opportunity to show the boxing world that he’s still mentally and physically still with the game. I think the Dirrell brothers would beat Kessler.

From what I saw of Kessler last year in his loss to Froch, he looked disengaged mentally in just hanging on the outside watching Froch throw one limp jab after another without jumping on him the way he’d done in their first fight in 2010. That version of Kessler would have taken Froch apart last year. But we didn’t see that Kessler last time, and it was a real let down.

Groves very likely will spoil Kessler’s dreams of a third fight with Froch by beating him this month. I doubt Kessler will go for the idea of fighting Groves, because it wouldn’t be as big as another Froch fight. It would be interesting to see if Hearn decides to ram a third Froch-Kessler fight down the public’s throat even with Froch coming off of a loss to Groves and Kessler having been inactive for an entire year. That would take a lot of bravado to make a move like that.
