froch#3By Scott Gilfoid: Carl Froch (33-2, 24 KO’s) got a nice little win tonight in beating Britain’s George Groves (19-2, 15 KO’s) for a second time in the last 6 months. Froch’s win now has people talking about his next opponent in line. James DeGale would like to be the next guy that faces him, and he took care of business earlier tonight in his IBF super middleweight title eliminator in stopping Brandon Gonzales.

There word from Dan Rafael is that his promoter Eddie Hearn is possibly interested in a fight against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Roy Jones Jr., a commentator for HBO, believes that Chavez Jr. is a much better match-up for Froch than Gennady Golovkin would be. Max Kellerman of HBO is in agreement with that too.

Kellerman feels that Froch would be a big underdog if he were to get in the ring with either Ward of Golovkin, mainly due to their ability to make Froch pay for all the technical mistakes he makes in the ring. Groves wasn’t experienced or talented enough to make Froch pay for his mistakes, but Kellerman and Jones Jr. believe that Golovkin and Ward are good enough.

Kesslerman said tonight, “Even if Andre Ward believes, maybe correctly, that Froch was promoted in such a way that he appeared to be a bigger star than he was during certain points during his career, however they got him there, he’s now there. 80,000 was in a stadium – plus British TV money. The economic incentive is to go over there [the UK], and not just for Andre Ward, but for Gennady Golovkin, Chavez Jr, who is himself a cash cow. What’s the crowd going to do for him against an Andre Ward, who is technically so superior or against Gennady Golovkin, who Roy [Jones Jr] points out, is not only going to make you pay for those mistakes, but is going to hurt you for them. That remains to be seen. I think he [Froch] would be a substantial underdog no matter where they fought – England, the moon, anywhere – against Andre Ward or Gennady Golovkin.”

Froch’s promoter Eddie Hearn isn’t all that interested in matching him up against Andre Ward, and he recently said that it wasn’t a fight that he saw as commercially viable. Of course, that could be just an excuse for Hearn not to have to make a fight that Froch would likely lose badly.

Golovkin and his management at K2 are likely licking their chops after watching the many mistakes that Froch made tonight against Groves. Even with Golovkin giving up a lot of size to Froch, he’d still be a total nightmare for him due to his huge punching power and his solid defensive skills. He’s not someone would he making the mistakes that Groves did by throwing left hooks at the same time Froch is throwing straight right hands. Golovkin is too smart to make those kinds of mistakes.

Hearn will likely go for the Chavez Jr. fight because he’s the bigger name than Golovkin, and likely because he’s the more beatable guy. Golovkin would be an option, but not the same as Chavez Jr. because the money angle.
