Judah: Mayweather doesn’t need to fight Maidana again

may101By Chris Williams: Former two division world champion Zab Judah was impressed with the way that Floyd Mayweather Jr. (46-0, 26 KO’s) figured out Marcos Maidana (35-4, 31 KO’s) and ended up out-boxing him this month in Mayweather’s 12 round decision win over the Argentinian fighter in Las Vegas, Nevada. Judah liked how Mayweather adapted to the furious attacks from Maidana, and then ended up picking him apart after four rounds of the fight. Judab believes that there’s no reason at all for Mayweather to fight Maidana again, because he has nothing more to prove.

“I think it’s [a Maidana-Mayweather rematch] not necessary. He [Mayweather] did enough,” Judah said. “He knows how to figure guys out and knows how to win. I think Mayweather broke him down excellently. His defense was sharp. He didn’t get hit with no crazy or silly stuff,” Judah said.

I’m in full agreement with Judah. I thought Mayweather boxed superbly while giving Maidana a handicap by choosing to stand in front of him instead of clowning him the way he did to Robert Guerrero and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. Mayweather could have made the fight against Maidana so one-sided that it would have upset fans, because they would have blamed him for facing someone like Maidana. But instead Mayweather took it easy on Maidana, and stood in the trenches with him. There’s no reason for a rematch given that Mayweather already showed that he can beat Maidana. In a rematch, boxing fans would see the fight that Mayweather could have given them if he hadn’t played down to his competition, and that wouldn’t make fans happy because they want to see competitive fights and it wouldn’t be.

Mayweather has to look out for number one from here on out, and face the guys that can bring him the most money. Guys like Maidana and Amir Khan aren’t big enough names to bring in the big money. What Mayweather needs is to take the winner of the Miguel Cotto vs. Sergio Martinez or Erislandy Lara vs. Canelo fight. Mayweather would get big bank fighting either winner of those fights, and the fans would love those fights. Fans won’t care too much for a Mayweather-Maidana rematch, because they probably know that Mayweather was taking it easy on Maidana by not using his boxing skills to make him look bad.
