Ellerbe: If Khan wants Mayweather fight, we’re fighting in September

khan67883By Chris Williams: Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellberbe says Amir Khan has a chance to be in the running for Floyd Mayweather Jr’s next fight on September 13th because that’s when he’s going to be fighting again. Khan says he has Ramadan during September and he can’t fight Mayweather. But Khan is going to need to be have flexibility with his schedules if he’s going to be able to take the big fights against guys like Mayweather. Once a fight is offered by Mayweather, it not ever be offered again.

“If Amir Khan wants to fight Floyd Mayweather, we’re going to fight on September 13,” Ellerbe told ESPN.

That sounds like Ellerbe is dropping a big hint that Khan would have had a good chance of getting the fight with Mayweather if he were able to fight him in this month. It’s too bad Khan can’t, because if this turns out to be the last offer that he receives from Mayweather for a fight, I’m sure Khan will be unhappy about it.

The problem is Mayweather has a long line of other top contenders who you can argue are more relevant than Khan because they’ve been staying active, something Khan hasn’t been doing, and they’ve been facing high quality opposition recently. That’s something Khan hasn’t been doing as well. He’s fought Luis Collazo, Julio Diaz and Carlos Molina in his last three fights.

Mayweather has three fights left on his Showtime/CBS contract before he likely retires next year, and the opponents for those fights are likely down to these four guys: Marcos Maidana, Danny Garcia, Shawn Porter and Keith Thurman. By Khan taking himself out of the running for Mayweather’s September fight, he could be ruining what may be his only chance for a fight against Mayweather. I wouldn’t normally think that, but with Ellerbe specifically mentioning Khan in his interview, it would seem that Khan would have had a good chance of getting the fight with Mayweather if he were available for September.
