de la hoya33By Chris Williams: Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya, the major shareholder for Golden Boy, says he’d like to keep Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer with the company, and he’s not interested in removing him from the head of the company. However, De La Hoya says if he has to, he’ll find somebody to take over the job just like he found Schaefer many years ago and put him as the head of his company. Right now it’s unclear whether Schaefer will be staying with Golden Boy or moving on to head his own company in the near future.

“Nobody’s going to dismiss Richard,” De La Hoya said via Mlive. “He’s not getting fired. I don’t want him to leave. There’s negotiations going back and forth, I don’t want him to leave. Nobody’s telling him to leave. The way I found Richard, many years ago, from the banking world, and asked him if he could come along with me and help me out, and we could start Golden Boy Promotions, they way I did that, I could do it again. That is no problem. That is no problem.”

That was a shot across the bow from De La Hoya to let Schaefer and boxing fans know that he’ll replace his long-time CEO if he has to.

Recently, De La Hoya expressed interest in wanting to do business with Top Rank promoter Bob Arum to set up a mega fight between Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Arum’s fighter Manny Pacquiao. Arum is open to the idea of talking with De La Hoya about a fight of that nature, and other fights between the two promotional giants. However, not long after De La Hoya’s comments about wanting to work with Arum, Schaefer came out in an interview with the Los Angeles Times saying that he won’t be working with Arum in cross promotional fights, and he mentioned that he would continue to take this stance for as long as he’s the CEO of Golden Boy. It was kind of strange for Schaefer to be talking openly about something that was the opposite of what De La Hoya wanted.

De La Hoya said this about working with Bob Arum: “Like I said, I met with Bob Arum to bury the hatchet, and down the road, down the line, for the sake of boxing, for the sake of the sport, there are a lot of great fights that can be made. We don’t have to be married, we don’t have to merge, we don’t have to hold hands, we don’t have to work out where everybody works happily together. We don’t have to do that. But there are ways of making fights happen.”
