Broner says he didn’t disrespect anybody

broner52By Allan Fox: Former three division world champion Adrien Broner (28-1, 22 KO’s) says he didn’t mean anything by his comment about Mexicans after his victory over Carlos Molina on the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Marcos Maidana fight card on May 3rd in Las Vegas, Nevada. Showtime interviewer Jim Gray asked Broner “What did you learn coming off that loss? [to Marcos Maidana]. That question seemed to set Broner off because said “It humbled me in some ways, but at the end of the day I’m still Adrien “The Problem” Broner, the can man. Anybody can get it; Africans, I just beat the [expletive] out of a Mexican.”

Broner stepped out of line with that comment, and not surprisingly he’s taken a massive amount of heat from boxing fans in the week since the fight. Broner finally decided to address the issue in a video where he said he didn’t mean anything against Mexicans.

Broner said “I’m getting a lot of negative feedback about the comment I said after my last fight. Now, I didn’t disrespect no Mexicans. I just called a Mexican a Mexican. I just want to say I love all my Mexicans. I just got to get it out there. I didn’t offend nobody. Shout out to Carlos Molina. He was tough.”

The reality is that Broner has upset a lot of Mexican fans with his comment. He may not have meant anything mean-spirited by singling out a racial group with his insensitive remark, but it came across that way to a lot of fans of the sport. And for Broner to make that comment after beating a fighter from a Mexican heritage made the comment even worse than it already was. Broner also made the remark on the Mexican holiday Cinco de Mayo.

Broner’s video is only going to be seen by a small handful of people, and it’s not going to reach the millions who saw him make that comment after his fight against Molina on May 3rd.

Other than the comment he made after his fight, Broner’s boxing career has a major question mark around it after his last three fights. He looked poor against Paulie Malignaggi, Maidana and now Molina. It was thought that Broner would be able to turn things around and start looking good again after he moved down to 140 for his last fight against Molina, but he looked almost as bad in that fight as he had in his two previous fights. The power wasn’t there, and neither was the speed or work rate.

You would have to figure that 140 is not the right weight for Broner either, because if that had been guys like Lucas Matthysse, Lamont Peterson or Danny Garcia in the ring with him on May 3rd instead of Molina, Broner very likely would have lost the fight. He probably needs to go back to 135 and hope that he can stay at that weight for his entire career, because he seems to lack the physical tools to compete at a high level at 140 and 147. Even at 135, there are some guys in that weight class that would have a good chance of beating Broner like Terence Crawford, Miguel Vazquez and Richard Abril.
