marquezBy Alon Calinao Dy: The 40-year-old Mexican boxer Juan Manuel Marquez is going to face Mike Alvarado this Saturday at the Forum in Inglewood, California, and the winner of this bout is the mandatory challenger to WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao.

Marquez lost via split decision to Timothy Bradley last June 2013. Last month, Pacquiao regained his WBO crown via unanimous decision over Bradley. Marquez wants that belt that’s why he is planning to go for another battle against Pacquiao.

Comparing Alvarado to Bradley, I guess Bradley is tougher than him since Tim did not experience a knockout loss. I also believe that Alvarado is not a threat to Marquez due to the fact that he already had a TKO loss to Ruslan Provodnikov last October. Marquez is a technician and a counter-puncher that will definitely school the younger Alvarado in their upcoming fight.

Eight-division world champion Pacquiao exposed Marquez in their last meeting even though he lost in that fight to Marquez by knockout, and in order for Alvarado to win the competition he should move well around the corner. In this way, perhaps, he can beat the veteran boxer Marquez in this contest. He can outclass the old Mexican if he attempts to use his power and speed advantage.

That’s why in this war it can go either way. It is up to Alvarado to utilize his age advantage to the ageing fighter. However, Marquez will use his experience in the ring to finish the bout early. He will try to push hard and find the right answer to the puzzle.

But Personally, I think Marquez will win in this game and will play smart. Based on Marquez’s resume, he is very clever and tough fighter. Although he is way past his prime, he can take enormous punishment or hard punches from his rival. I don’t think he will be knocked out, owing to the fact that he is tough-as-nails.

So I pick Marquez for Alvarado-Marquez showdown to win in this competition because he has been through many wars before; and he survived from the damage he took from “Mexicutioner” Pacquiao. But I think it would be a dangerous bout for Marquez to go for a fifth time against the Filipino boxing champ.
