By Jim Dower: In a battle of aging fighters, 38-year-old Joachim Alcine (35-7-2, 21 KO’s) and Delvin Rodriguez (28-7-4, 16 KO’s) fought to a controversial 10 round draw on Friday night at the Olympic Stadium, in Montreal, Quebec, Canad. The final judges scores were 97-93 for Rodriguez, 96-94 for Alcine and 95-95 even. The judge that scored it for Rodriguez seemed to have the correct score for the fight because Rodriguez dominated the fight with his pressure, combination punching and superior power.

Alcine was the home fighter, though, as he’s a Canadian based fighter, so that put Rodriguez in a situation where he needed to really give Alcine a beating for him to be sure that he got the win. While Rodriguez did dominate the fight, he didn’t do enough to beat the hometown fighter.

Rodriguez did a good job of taking the fight to Alcine in rounds one through four, and nailing him with solid right hands to the head. However, Alcine did a good job of leaning away from many of Rodriguez’s shots and he was able to lessen the impact of the shots. Alcine’s shoulder roll defense also prevented Rodriguez from nailing him with some shots that might have ended the night had they landed.

Alcine came into the fight having lost 5 out of his last 7 fights with his career basically in shambles. The guys that Alcine had struggled against in the past three years were fighters that worked their way to the inside and blasted him with shots to the head. Rodriguez failed to do that tonight though, as he stayed on the outside for the most part looking to land shots from medium to long range.

Heavyweight Derric Rossy (29-8, 14 KO’s) defeated Joe Hanks (21-2, 14 KO’s) by a 10 round majority decision in winning by the scores 95-95, 97-93, and 98-92. It appeared to be a clear cut win by Rossy, and it was hard to see what the one referee was looking at who scored the fight even at 95-95. I’m not sure what more Rossy had to do to get the victory than what he did tonight, because he hurt Hanks at one point and looked great.
