Yuri Foreman vs. Jorge Melendez possible for Cotto-Martinez undercard

foreman4334By Dan Ambrose: A fight between former WBA World junior middleweight champion Yuri Foreman (32-2, 9 KO’s) and Jorge Melendez (28-3-1, 26 KO’s) is being talked about for the June 7th undercard of the Miguel Cotto vs. Sergio Martinez fight, according to Dan Rafael. The card is still being formed at this point, but it’s looking too good as far as undercard fights go.

HBO will be televising this on pay-per-view from Madison Square Garden, in New York. If the Foreman-Melendez fight does get added to the card, it has a good chance of being to co-feature based on the other three fighters they have on the undercard.

“The promoters — Top Rank, DiBella, Sampson, Cotto Promotions — all arguing over fights,” Rafael said on ESPN. “One possible fight for that card I have heard is Jorge Melendez vs. Yuri Foreman.”

Foreman lost his WBA 154lb title in a 9th round TKO loss to Cotto back in June of 2010. Foreman’s right knee gave out on him, and he took punishment until the fight was halted in the 9th. In his next fight after that, Foreman was halted in the 6th round by Pawel Wolak in March of 2011. Since that fight, Foreman has won his last four fights in beating Brandon Baue, Gundrick King, Jamaal Davis and Jovany Javier Gomez.

There’s really nothing wrong with the Foreman-Melendez fight, but it is kind of difficult to see the fight as being worthy of PPV. It would be a good little ESPN2 fight on Friday Night Fights, but it’s definitely not a great addition to the Cotto vs. Martinez undercard.

Melendez, 25, was recently beaten by Nick Brinson last year. Since that loss, Melendez has won his last two fights against Jamaal Davis and Richard Gutierrez.

The other fights on the card are as follows:

Jose Pedraza vs. TBA
Wilfredo Vazquez Jr vs. TBA
Felix Verdejo vs. TBA
