shumenov33By Allan Fox: WBA light heavyweight champion Beibut Shumenov (14-1, 9 KO’s) and IBF champion Bernard Hopkins weighed in today for their fight on Saturday night at the DC Armory in Washington, DC. Hopkins, 49, weighed in at 172.5lbs, and looked in excellent shape as he always does. Shumenov, 30, came in a little heavier at 174.5lbs, and was one-half bout below the light heavyweight limit of 175.

During the face off, both Hopkins and Shumenov exchanged words up close. It was somewhat odd to see Shumenov firing back at Hopkins, because up until now, he’d been mostly reserved and had let Hopkins do a lot of the talking. But it good to see Shumenov fire back at Hopkins to let him know that he has a fight on his hands on Saturday night.

IBF welterweight champion Shawn Porter weighed in at 146.8lbs for his first title defense of his IBF 147lb title against former two division world champion Paulie Malignaggi. Porter looked in great shape. For his part, Malignaggi weighed 146.2. Malignaggi is trying to win a third world title, but he’s got his work cut out for him in this fight.

WBO middleweight champion Peter Quillin weighed 159.8lbs for his defense against his mandatory challenger Lucas Konecny. Quillin is wants to impress in this fight after struggling to defeat Gabriel Rosado in his last title defense, which left a lot of questions about whether Quillin would have won the fight had Rosado not suffered a cut. Konecny, a junior middleweight through most of his career, weighed in at 158.25lbs.

This is going to be a real difficult fight for Konecny because he’s failed each time he’s stepped it up during his career, and this is a considerable step up from the mostly lower level 2nd tier opposition that he’s faced during his long career.
