martirosyan45By Dan Ambrose: #11 WBO Vanes Martirosyan (34-1-1, 21 KO’s) will be making a quick return to the ring next month on May 10th against an opponent still to be determined on the Chris Arreola vs. Bermane Stiverne 2 card at the USC Galen Center in Los Angeles, California. Martirosyan, who is no longer promoted by Top Rank, wants to make up for lost time and wants to fight as often as possible to take his career to the next level.

Still young at 27, Martirosyan’s career has been in quicksand for the past four years with him seemingly fighting mostly endless tune-up bouts against older fighters without stepping it up in a consistent basis. He fought to a 9 round technical draw against Erislandy Lara in 2012, and he lost a 12 round split decision to Demetrius Andrade last November, but those were pretty much the only real meaningful fights he had during his career other than his controversial 10 round decision win over Kassim Ouma in 2010.

Martirosyan’s new promoter Dan Goosen said “Vanes made it very clear upon signing he wanted to stay busy and grow his fan base here in California; the added benefit is his desire to work in the gym under his new trainer, Joe Goossen.”

I hope for Martirosyan’s sake that Goosen plans on fighting him on a regular basis against quality opposition because he’s wasted most of his 9-year pro career in facing weak opposition endlessly. You know things are bad when you see that Martirosyan only has three quality opponents to show for 9 years as a pro.

If Martirosyan had the experience against good opposition going into his fight against Andrade last November, he would have won that fight. But Martirosyan fought like someone who wasn’t used to fighting good opposition, and his conditioning looked poor. You can blame that on all the soft opponents that Martirosyan has faced during his career which has allowed him to score quick knockouts that kept him from developing his stamina.
