Stevenson runs straight to Showtime and away from Kovalev

stevenson13243By Bradley Dee: Last week WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson made the predictable and expected move away from HBO and WBO light heavyweight champion Sergei Kovalev to Showtime and Al Haymon and proved what we all thought, he does not want to fight Kovalev.

A fight with Kovalev was everything but a done deal for later on this year. However, instead of fighting the number one, toughest fight in the division, Stevenson is cashing out on the expected easy win over the other unimportant champions in the division. The days of boxing champions wanting to fight the best fighters are over. Now, champions just want the easiest fights for the highest amount of money. The glory is gone. The general belief in most of the boxing world is that Adonis is ducking Kovalev. He looked like a scared person when asked about the fight on Television after his last fight, and instead he talked about facing a super middleweight, and he has proven he does not want the fight by moving to a different network.

The only thing that would be sweet irony is if Stevenson loses his next fight. One can only hope that is the case, so he would be forced to look in a different direction. If he does win the next fight, maybe he’ll get beaten by Bernard Hopkins or Beibut Shumenov, but we all know Hopkins/Shumenov/Kovalev will never happen because of the network wars.

What’s next for Kovalev? Well, there’s a pointless fight with Jean Pascal that could happen, or Kovalev could make the jump to Cruiser. Although his height at 6 feet could limit him at Cruiser or Heavyweight, his skill set would be enough to overcome the few inches he lacks in height over the top couple of champs at Cruiserweight. I wouldn’t mind seeing him in against Huck, that would be a good fight, and there’s several more in the division that would be great.

Stevenson must have watched the fight where Kovalev killed a man in the ring. Roman Simakov died shortly after his fight with Kovalev. Seeing this can do things to a person’s courage.

Just today headlines were made where Hopkins and Shumenov are both chomping at the bits to get to Stevenson and looking forward to this fight.

No one wants the real fight against Kovalev.
