quillin53By Jim Dower: WBO middleweight champion Peter Quillin (31-0, 22 KO’s) successfully defended his title against 35-year-old #2 WBO Lukas Konecny (50-5, 23 KO’s) on Saturday night at the DC Armory, in Washington, District of Columbia, USA. The final judges scores were 120-108, 119-109 and 119-109. The crowd booed the fight frequently from the 9th round on due to Quillin’s safety first manner of fighting.

He had a small punching bag in front of him in the form of the short 5’8″ Konecny, but Quillin chose not to take any risks in the fight. The fight resembled a sparring session for the most part due to the slow pace. Quillin treated Konecny like he was a huge puncher like Gennady Golovkin. Konecny landed some nice shots in close, but his power shouldn’t have worried Quillin.

Konecny was constantly walking forward and getting in close to smother a lot of the power of Quillin. Konecny has little problems landing his shots, but he just wasn’t willing to throw enough shots.

“The winner of the Sergio Martinez-Miguel Cotto, I want it. The winner of the Chavez Jr-Golovkin, I want it,” Quillin said after the fight.

Quillin will be facing #5 WBO Daniel Jacobs next in what will likely take place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. That could be a very tough fight for Quillin if Jacobs’ chin holds up in this fight. Quillin looked vulnerable against the limited Konecny in this fight, and Jacobs can punch and put his shots together. Jacobs still doesn’t look quite like the fighter he was before his medical problem sidelined his career, but he’s still a very good puncher.

You have to wonder why the World Boxing Organization ranked the 35-year-old Konecny at No.2 in the division because he looked very poor and nothing like someone who should be ranked in the top 15 and definitely not in the top 5.
