porter02By Daniel Hughes: Over here in the UK the Shawn Porter-Paulie Malignaggi fight drew a lot of media attention for several reasons. Malignaggi is very popular here, because his analytical boxing breakdown of fights as much as his technical skills admired. He’s a fantastic talker a big career ahead in the media world awaits.

The fact Kell Brook was awaiting the winner added to the intrigue. We now know who he will face. Brook speaking in the build up to Saturday night’s fight made no real secret of who he wanted to face ‘The Magic Man’, for many reasons now apparent to those who saw the dismantling of Malignaggi in Washington.

The view Porter would have too much raw power for Malignaggi, borne out by what transpired inside four rounds. The real statement being the wily, seasoned ring veteran many thought could possibly conjure up a plan to negate the power, pressure and strength Porter possesses to certainly take it to the cards at least and maybe upset the betting favourite. However, Malignaggi was brutally exposed. The fact that Porter won was no great surprise, but how he executed it will be the concern for Brook’s team. Porter’s style is totally wrong for Brook. The Devon Alexander fight would have given Brook a decent chance, while still being the underdog. Porter is a pressure fighter that will not let Brook settle. Away from the home comforts of Sheffield a tough night lays ahead for Brook.

Brook has previously struggled when under pressure; his first meeting with Carson Jones, a decent yet limited campaigner, Brook came through in the end and sustained segments of pressure but he made it through that fight. The intense sustained work rate that Porter will bring, that is what he will not in my opinion be able to handle. Brook will have to be in a shape both mentally and physically far of anything he has attained so far. The questions have been asked of him on both these issues previously. The correct steps have been made so no excuses. Those issues have been now dealt with.

The real challenge for Brook is formulating a plan that can upset Porter somehow. With his trainer Dominic Ingle, Brook will need to figure out how to solve the Porter puzzle. The 27 year old Sheffield fighter will be under a whole lot more scrutiny away from home and a genuine, dangerous fighter in Porter will definitely make it difficult for him.

The 32 (22ko)-0 challenger the self-named ‘Special One’ will have to show the world why his promoter Eddie Hearn believes he can win this fight.

In the coming days the bruises will heal on Malignaggi. The question will be asked of him of this fight as pundit in how sees the Porter-Brook fight going? Porter will no doubt get his endorsement. For a first world title tilt, Brook has a real hard task ahead of him. ‘The Special One’ is going to have to figure out a way to beat Porter.
