malignaggi34By Dan Ambrose: IBF welterweight champion Shawn Porter (24-0, 15 KO’s) destroyed former two division world champion Paulie Malignaggi (33-6, 7 KO’s) by a 4th round TKO on Saturday night at the DC Armory in Washington, DC. Malignaggi took a real beating in this fight, and was cut in the 1st round from a jab.

Porter knocked a bloodied Malignagi down in the 4th round with a chopping right hand to the head. After Malignaggi got back up, Porter mowed Malignaggi down with a flurry of shots to put him down on his back for the second time in the round. However, it looked like Porter bumped Malignaggi to the canvas after hitting him with a hard right hand to the head. The referee then stepped in and halted the fight.

After the fight, Porter said “I definitely needed a victory like that. I knew what he was coming with, and I asked him some questions of my own.”

Porter didn’t say who will be next for him, but it’s likely going to be #1 IBF Kell Brook unless he fails to stay healthy during training camp for the fight.

“If this is my last fight then I lost to a great fighter,” Malignaggi said afterwards.

Malignaggi said he’s going to go home and decision whether he’ll be continuing with his career or not. But as bad as Porter beat him, it’s hard to say where Malignaggi can go from here. He doesn’t want to end his career on a loss, but unless they match him carefully then he’s going to struggle and likely lose again. One fight that would be perfect for Malignaggi would be a rematch with Broner, who Malignaggi lost a controversial decision to last year. Broner’s still in the rebuilding stage of his career after his disappointing loss to Marcos Maidana last December. A fight against Malignaggi would be perfect for him.
