“People say why did I choose Maidana? Styles make fights. This is tailor-made to be a war. He’s made a big impact on the sport of boxing with his last fight. Maidana’s going to be relentless, a guy I can’t overlook. Young, strong, tough competitor, anything can happen.”
For Maidana, this is easily going to be the toughest test of his career in fighting Mayweather, because he’s not had to face anyone nearly as talented as him in the past. Maidana has been tested against guys like Erik Morales, Devon Alexander, Amir Khan, Jesus Soto Karass, Andriy Kotelnik and Victor Ortiz. None of those fighters have the kind of talent that Maidana will be facing in the ring when he faces Mayweather. 45 have tried and 45 have failed against Mayweather during his 18-year pro career.
The question is will Maidana be No.46 on Mayweather’s resume. Will the Argentinian fighter be just another victim for Mayweather? We’re going to find out on Saturday night in this exciting clash. But I have a feeling that even if Maidana loses, he’s going to make this fight one of the best that we’ve seen in quite a while. Maidana has the key to beating Mayweather, as we saw in his last fight against Adrien Broner. Maidana knows how to defeat the shoulder roll defense that Mayweather uses, but we just don’t know if it’ll work on the real thing in Mayweather. Maidana showed that he could beat Broner with him using the shoulder roll defense, but now he’s going to need to show that he can do it against someone who knows how to use it.
“I know he is the favorite, but I don’t care,” Maidana said. “I’ve crossed paths with lions. I keep going forward and leave it in God’s hands. This is one of the biggest fights I will ever fight. If he wants to win, he’ll have to kill me first. He won’t know what hit him.”
