Mayweather: I’m looking for a knockout against Maidana

By Chris Williams: Floyd Mayweather Jr. (45-0, 26 KO’s) says he’ll be looking to score a knockout this Saturday night when he faces the tough Argentinian fighter Marcos Maidana (35-3, 31 KO’s) in “The Moment” at the beautiful MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

“In this fight I’m looking for a knockout,” Mayweather said. “In the Canelo fight, I got hurt. In the Guerrero fight, I got hurt. In my last two fights, I got hurt, but this time we’re going to stand right there and give people what they want to see. That’s what it’s about, excitement.”

Mayweather’s last knockout came at the expense of Victor Ortiz in 2011, and since that time Mayweather has beaten three very good fighters in Miguel Cotto, Robert Guerrero and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez by decision. It would be difficult for anyone in boxing to try and score knockouts against fighters like that, especially with Mayweather moving up in weight two of them. Mayweather had Cotto out on his feet in the 12th round when he opened up with a flurry of head shots. Had Mayweather not backed off in that round, he very likely would have knocked Cotto out as well.

Maidana is going to force Mayweather to unleash his power in this fight, because he’s going to be looking to knock Mayweather out with every shot he throws on Saturday. Against a fighter who is looking to hurt him, Mayweather will have no other choice but to unload on Maidana with everything in his arsenal in order to get him before he can cause bodily harm.

“This is going to be an action packed fight,” Mayweather said. “He carries Argentina on his back, whereas me myself, my fan base is world wide. Two champions, this is ‘The Moment’ everyone’s been waiting for. He just dethroned a guy who they say is the next Floyd Mayweather, which is Adrien Broner.”

Maidana beat Broner and treated him like he was a speed bump in the road in handing out a beating to him. Maidana wasn’t troubled at all my Broner’s shoulder roll defense or his powerful pot shots. There was only one punch that Broner seemed to get Maidana’s attention in that fight, and that was when Broner hit Maidana after the bell ending the 11th round. Maidana was hurt from that shot, but he recovered immediately.

Mayweather will meet Maidana head on in this fight, and we’re going to see who the better fighter is on Saturday night. Maidana needs a win for him to get a big money rematch, so he stands to gain a lot if he can pull off a miracle victory. For Mayweather, a victory is expected in this fight, and he won’t get the credit he desires from fans. When you have the talent that Mayweather has, you’re expected to win every time out with ease. The only way Mayweather will get his props is if he moves up in weight and defeats someone like Gennady Golovkin, Andre Ward or Adonis Stevenson. Those are the only guys that can really test Mayweather, because there’s really no one at 140-154 that can give him any real challenge right now, unless Maidana can score a knockout win on Saturday.
