Mayweather: Can Maidana crack the May-vinci code?

floyd7771By Chris Williams: Floyd Mayweather Jr. (45-0, 26 KO’s) knows he has a tough fight on his hands in his unification bout in less than two weeks against WBA welterweight champion Marcos Maidana (35-3, 31 KO’s) on May 3rd at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Mayweather will be putting up his WBC 147lb title on the line for this fight, and he’s showing Maidana nothing but respect.

Mayweather saw the raw power that Maidana showed in working over Adrien Broner in beating him last December by a 12 round decision, and he doesn’t want to fall victim of overlooking him.

Maidana thinks he has the code to crack the May-vinci code after his win over Broner. Maidana’s plan comes down to this: to come at Mayweather in waves of all-out assaults where he hopes will be too much for him. Maidana doesn’t have the engine to go after Mayweather in continuous attacks, so you can expect him to rest a little in between his assaults.

“Since Marcos Maidana beat Adrian Broner everyone said ‘you know this guy has the remedy to crack the May-vinci code.’ Is it possible? Maybe, but I’m still beating guys young enough to be my sons. I’m motivated because of my legacy, my family, and my will to win. I don’t want to let myself down. I don’t want to let no one down. I want everyone to know that Floyd Mayweather is worthy and even more. Is it about the money? Yes. Is it about the fame? Yes. It’s everything wrapped up in one. I want to be the best; not just the best fighter, but the best athlete, period. When I leave, I will be known as T-B-E, and that’s the best ever. Once we get to this level, we can choose any guy we want. Some hit the jackpot, some don’t. That’s life. May 3rd, I can’t overlook this guy. He’s tough. He’s got a will to win just like I have the will to win. So this is a tough fight for me.”

Maidana definitely had the right fight to get him ready for Mayweather by taking on Broner last December. That was the perfect warm-up fight for Maidana to take to get him prepared for what he’ll be facing when he meets up with Mayweather. However, Maidana’s still going to find it a much different situation against Mayweather than it was against the overconfident Broner, who did a poor job of studying Mayweather’s past fights in order to model his fighting style.

If Broner had Mayweather’s fighting style completely memorized, he’d have done a much better job against Maidana and likely beaten him easily. But Broner would still have been lacking Mayweather’s speed, experience, ring intelligence and overall athletic ability even if he did copy every move that Mayweather makes in the ring and use it against Maidana.

Maidana is going to need to use his jab against Mayweather if he doesn’t want this fight to get out of hand too quickly, because he’s not going to be able to plod into punching range against Mayweather without throwing a jab to clear the way.
