Manuel Charr wants Wladimir Klitschko world title shot

wladimir31By Allan Fox: Having fought former WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko and failed at capturing his title two years ago, #7 WBC Manuel Charr (26-1, 15 KO’s) is now looking to get a world title shot against Vitali’s brother IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (62-3, 52 KO’s) for his next fight.

Charr, 29, tried to get into the ring last night in Oberhausen, Germany to call Wladimir out in front of television reporters in the aftermath of Wladimir’s easy 5th round TKO win over Alex Leapai, but the German security personnel blocked Charr’s entrance into the ring. But that didn’t stop Charr from calling Wladimir out, as he created a Youtube video to relay his message to the Ukrainian fighter.

Of all the contenders that want a world title shot against Wladimir, Charr is arguably the least deserving due to the weak opposition he’s faced since being knocked out by Vitali Klitschko. Since his bloodbath against Vitali, Charr has beaten the following heavyweights: Konstantin Airich, Yakup Saglam, Oleksiy Mazikin, Denis Bakhtov and Kevin Johnson. He’s not faced guys like Tyson Fury, Dereck Chisora, and the other top contenders needed for him to be calling out Wladimir right now. He’s clearly jumping the gun by trying to get a second world title fight without beating the guys needed to deserve the fight.

Charr said “Wladimir, I will fight against you whenever and wherever you want. Yesterday had nothing to do with a real world title fight as anyone would mop the canvas with Alex Leapai. Fight against real opponents – fight me! Don’t run away like your brother! Even your own manager Bernd Bönte seems to have found new respect for me, the first time I showed up on one of your press conferences, I was a third tier Boxer in his opinion, yesterday, after all, he said I was a second tier fighter. Wait and see after I beat and dethrone you, he will speak of the first-class Boxer Manuel Charr! I’m ready. I will give you a real fight because I want to win and not the show how you staged with a 50-year-old Shannon Briggs! And one more thing to your manager Bönte, he said no one wants to see the fight. Really? What do you think what the people want to see? Yesterdays boxing or boxing of tomorrow? Fight me!”

For Wladimir to fight Charr, it would have to be an optional title defense because Charr isn’t ranked high enough to get the title shot as Wladimir’s mandatory challenger to the WBC, and it’s unlikely at this point that the German based Charr could ever get to that point as the WBC mandatory. The WBC is pretty well stacked right now with Bermane Stiverne, Chris Arreola, Bryant Jennings, Mike Perez and Tony Thompson all ranked ahead of Charr. It would be a real long shot for Charr to beat any of those fighters, because they all appear to be better than him and in some cases much better than him.

A Charr vs. Wladimir fight would be exclusively for German consumption because the fight would be of little importance to the rest of the world due to Charr not being well known outside of Germany. Charr’s talent is pretty close to that of Leapai, and it would be another Leapai type of fight for Wladimir. I’m not sure that it would be the best fight for Wladimir to take right now if he wants to do something meaningful for his next fight in 2014. Wladimir has an IBF mandatory due against challenger Kubrat Pulev, and he also is interested in fighting the winner of the Stiverne vs. Arreola fight for the WBC heavyweight title. Fighting Charr would be a backwards move for Wladimir, and it might not even interest the German fans.
