Manny Pacquiao’s future

pac222999By Darnell Brown Jr: As much as we respect WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao (56-5-2, 38 KO’s) for his pure will to fight, the fans of the sport have grown tired of the rematches that we have been fed recently. Let’s just face it; if Manny remains with his current promoters at Top Rank there’s a chance that’s what we’ll be getting for the remainder of his career. In my view, they just don’t have the talent at welterweight or light welterweight to sustain a leg in the class to enable Pacquiao to have interesting fights for what’s left of his career.

If Pacquiao chooses not to leave Top Rank at the end of the year, he will likely be stuck in a nonstop cycle of rematches and we the fans will be stuck watching them. To be sure, there was clearly a valid reason to have a rematches like Pacquiao vs. Tim Bradley 2 or even Juan Manuel Marquez vs. Pacquiao 4, but even that was pushing it.

There is a time for some fighters to get out and venture to look for better career opportunities, and to me it is Pacquiao’s time to do so. Even if the Floyd Mayweather fight does not happen for him, Pacquiao will get plenty of other fights if he leaves Top Rank and find his own fights. There are a lot of fights he could make between 140-147, such as Danny Garcia, Adrien Broner, Marcos Maidana, Amir Khan, Mayweather, and Shawn Porter.

The one thing Pacquiao needs to know its not his promoter who makes the fight big, it is his name and when he figures out how much money he can make there will be no looking back.

For me, it would be a blessing to see one of the greats like Pacquiao fight other top guys in the sport rather than seeing an endless cycle of rematches. At this point Pacquiao has earned the opportunity to promote himself and he should reward his fans to watch him fight some of these young guys. Lets face; it no one wants to see Pacquiao vs. Miguel Cotto 2 or any other rematch. We need to see Pacquiao fight a new face. Some times you need to let go to get more.
