Maidana: I’m going to attack Mayweather from the get go

maidana5By Chris Williams: Marcos Maidana (35-3, 31 KO’s) says he’s going to put it all on the table this Saturday night in his fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr (45-0, 26 KO’s) by going after him immediately, and not let up for as long as the fight lasts in their fight called “The Moment” from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Maidana knows that he’s facing the most talented fighter in the world right now, but he thinks his own power and offensive skills will be enough to overcome Mayweather’s huge talents.

“There’s no doubt this is going to be a very difficult fight,” Maidana said. “There’s no doubt that Floyd has very good defensive skills, but I have a great attack, and that’s what I’ll use. I have to do the same thing I did with Broner. I have go hard from the get go and attack. I know it’s going to be more difficult with a man like Floyd Mayweather.”

Mayweather hasn’t faced anyone that really went after him in many years, and it’s going to be good for him to get a chance to shift out of 1st gear for a change in one of his fights. With his talent, Mayweather has made good fighters like Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Miguel Cotto look average. Those guys would have stood better chance perhaps if they had Maidana’s brains and heart.

Cotto and Canelo spent too much time thinking and trying to box Mayweather instead of attacking him the way that Maidana will on Saturday. In that respect you’ve got to give Maidana props for doing more with the talent that he’s been given than Cotto and Canelo. Maidana is going to make a real fight out of it, and he’s definitely going to put Mayweather in a position where he’ll need to shift through his gears on Saturday night to get the win.

Maidana is banking on the fact that he’ll be able to defeat Mayweather’s shoulder roll the same way he sliced through Broner’s last December. Mayweather said he’s going to give Maidana a big handicap in this fight by staying stationary for him by standing in the pocket and challenging him at what he does best. Mayweather will be putting his feet into cement on Saturday and daring Maidana to try and beat him the way that he did Broner. Mayweather will be duplicating Broner’s game plan of standing still in front of Maidana, except that he’s going to do his best to show that he’s talented enough to beat him even using a flawed fight plan like the one Broner employed.

This is going to be exciting to see Mayweather go toe-to-toe with Maidana, because not too many fighters have done that with Maidana and made it through the fight in one piece. Devon Alexander held him for 10 rounds, and Amir Khan ran from him for 12 rounds. Jesus Soto Karass tried to slug with Maidana, and was knocked out in 8 rounds. It’s almost impossible to beat Maidana if you stand directly in front of him, but Mayweather is going to do that on Saturday.
