Maccarinelli might stop Braehmer once he connects, says Lockett

maccarinelli32By Scott Gilfoid: Gary Lockett, the trainer for Enzo Maccarinelli (38-6, 30 KO’s), thinks he could knock WBA World light heavyweight champion Juergen Braehmer (42-2, 31 KO’s) out this Saturday night as soon as he lands a big shot at the Stadthalle, Rostock, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany.

Maccarinelli has a 3-fight winning streak against Courtney Fry, Ovill McKenzie and Carl Wild. Those guys aren’t anywhere near being in the same class as Braehmer. What this means is that Maccarinelli’s empty wins are no indication that he’s going to be competitive with Braehmer, or that he’s going to have a chance of beating him if he lands something big.

Maccarinelli definitely had big power when he was fighting in the cruiserweight division, but he’s not the same puncher now that he’s melted down muscle to fight in the light heavyweight division. Maccarinelli didn’t lose fat to get down to the light heavyweight division, because he was a lean fighter even at cruiserweight. He clearly lost a lot of muscle, and along with it he lost his power. The power just isn’t there for Maccarinelli anymore. Yeah, he’s still knocking guys out, but he doesn’t look powerful doing it.

Lockett seems a little too hopeful for Maccarinelli without having the ability to distance himself from the reality of the situation. The fact is Maccarinelli pretty much has no chance of winning this fight, and the only real question is how he’s going to lose. Will it be a situation where Braehmer knocks him out in a vicious fashion like we saw in Maccarinelli’s knockout losses to David Haye, Alexander Frenkel.

Denis Lebedev and Ola Afrolabi, or will Maccarinelli simply be dominated by Braehmer in getting beaten by a one-sided decision? I can’t make up my mind about which way Maccarinelli’s going to get it.

“Enzo has to trust in his jab, trust in his defence and his technique and, if he does that, he’s almost certainly going to land clean once in the fight,” Lockett said.” Given how hard Enzo hits, once might be enough. He certainly hits harder than Braehmer does. But I’d not be at all surprised if he pulls this off. Trawling through Braehmer’s record, I can’t see that he’s faced anybody before that can punch anything like Enzo.”

In the big scheme of things, it doesn’t really matter how Maccarinelli loses the fight. Just by the act of losing, he’ll be at the end of the trail in terms of getting another world title shot. Unless you have one of those promoters that can get you a world title shot immediately off of loss, Maccarinelli is going to find himself in a situation where he’ll have to climb for years to try and get another crack at a belt. With Maccarinelli about to turn 34, I don’t think he’s going to have enough time to get another world title shot before he starts to age out.
