Khan: I can force Mayweather to fight me by showing my skills and strength

khan4343By Scott Gilfoid: Amir Khan (28-3, 19 KO’s) thinks he’ll not only steal the show in two weeks in his fight against Luis Collazo (35-5, 18 KO’s) on the May 3rd Floyd Mayweather Jr vs. Marcos Maidana fight card at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, but he’ll also force Mayweather to fight him by looking so good in the Collazo fight.

Khan hasn’t looked good in a fight in three years since since he fought a past his prime Zab Judah in 2011. Since then it’s been one awful performance after another for Khan with him going 2-2 in his last four fights. Khan still feels he’s going to steal the show and force Mayweather to fight him by looking good against the 33-year-old Collazo.

“By showing my skills and strengths, I believe I can force Mayweather to finally fight me…because it will be a fight that fans call for,” Khan said. “I want the world to see me putting the pressure on [Mayweather] with a good performance. I want to steal the show. Adrien Broner is also on the bill, but he will walk through his opponent Carlos Molina. And is there anyone out there who really fancies Maidana to beat Mayweather?”

So in other words, Khan sees himself stealing the show by default because of Mayweather and Broner being involved in mismatches, and him facing a guy who has only faced one semi-relevant opponent in the past 5 years in Collazo. I agree that Golden Boy Promotions definitely set it up for Khan to knock it out of the park by setting him up with Collazo instead of someone younger with a much better chance of beating him like Keith Thurman, Shawn Porter, Lamont Peterson, Lucas Matthysse, Danny Garcia, and Devon Alexander.

Khan is going to have to look awfully good in this fight for the boxing fans to put pressure on Mayweather to fight him. The fact is fans were putting pressure on Mayweather NOT to fight Khan before this fight card was put together. Mayweather’s poll was one by Khan on the Mayweather Promotions website, but that was after Khan encouraged his millions of twitter followers to vote him into the fight. Maidana was winning the poll until Khan egged his followers to vote for him. Khan is going to need to a demolition job against Collazo to create pressure on Mayweather from fans.

If Khan makes it look too easy in beating Collazo, then fans will simply see Collazo as some stiff that was brought in to make Khan look good instead of having him fight a real contender. Khan better hope that his fight with Collazo is as exciting as his fights with Marcos Maidana, Lamont Peterson and Julio Diaz were, because a one-sided fight won’t accomplish anything for Khan. He’s already facing an older fighter who has been out of the loop for 5 years. That’s a heck of a long time.

Collazo just disappeared completely after 2009, as he fought nothing but 3rd tier opposition until his fight against Ortiz last January. And Ortiz looked like a 3rd tier fighter as well in that fight, so we really don’t know how much Collazo has left because he didn’t face anyone really relevant. Had Collazo beaten Thurman or Porter, then you could get excited about Khan fighting him, but he didn’t. Collozo just beat Ortiz, and that’s not good enough to sell him as a quality opponent to be fighting on a pay-per-view card.
