Heavyweight “Super” 8, or Heavyweight “Shot 8”?

By Bradley Dee: I often find myself browsing Boxrec for no reason other than wanting as much knowledge about boxing history as I can possibly absorb, and today I noticed that someone has organized a tournament they’re calling the Heavyweight “Super 8” tournament. Digging deeper, I started noticing some of the names in this tournament, and much to my surprise I see Sam Peter on the list as well as 4 other completely over the hill fighters.

So far, Samuel Peter, Martin Rogan, Michael Sprott and Hasim Rahman appear to be signed up for this tournament according to Boxrec. Digging a little deeper I located the website and confirmed these are all on the card so far, and more coming.

What is the point of this so called “Super 8” tournament? The list of fighters fighting in the fights are nowhere near even top 25 heavyweights. The point is $500,000. A good reason for someone like Sam Peter to come out of a non-announced retirement and fight again.

The rules indicate it will be three rounds for each fight, perfect for out of shape fighters or old fighters who just don’t have it anymore, much like Rahman. Most of these fighters best years are behind them. Hasim Rahman’s last notable win was years and years ago. Sam Peter is coming off knockout losses to Wladimir Klitschko and Robert Helenius. Several of the other fighters never even were a force at heavyweight, especially Martin Rogan. Michael Sprott? I can’t even find a good win on his resume dating years back.

If I had to predict a winner (so far), I would have to say Sam Peter will probably win the tournament as he is the least shot of all these fighters on the list and even out of shape he has more power than any of them and probably can do it for 3 rounds.

It looks like four broadcasters are signed up including Sky. For more information on the fights go here: www.supereight.co.nz

Shannon Briggs, here’s your chance, why haven’t you entered yet?
