Groves: Froch needs to see a psychiatrist, not a sports psychologist

groves8By Scott Gilfoid: Challenger George Groves (19-1, 15 KO’s) says that IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch (32-2, 23 KO’s) is seeing a sports psychologist in getting ready for their May 31st rematch at the Wembley Arena. Groves thinks that Froch is wasting his time with the Psychologist, as he sees him in need of a psychiatrist due to his reluctance to come in contact with him during their press conferences to help build up their rematch.

Groves isn’t too pleased that Froch isn’t interacting with him as much in the buildup for this fight compared to in their previous bout last November.

“The reason there’s been no press conferences is because it’s not needed and Carl doesn’t want it,” Groves said to IFL TV. “He can’t spend any waking moment around me. I heard him say in an interview that he’s seeing a sports psychologist, which I find fascinating…He really needs to see a psychiatrist. There’s really nothing that can help him. He’s not coping. He can’t even do a face off. Carl is not a confident person. He doesn’t have self-belief. He’s not even a warrior. He’s like a cat. You lash it to a corner and it’ll fight back. That’s what he is.”

Gosh, that sounds bad. Why would Froch need to see a sports psychologist?

Groves went onto say that Froch didn’t want the rematch with him, and that he had to actually force the issue in order to get his chance at a rematch with him.

The two fighters are going to need to meet a number of times in press conferences and various interviews for this fight to do well. I just hope that Froch is willing to be in close proximity so that Groves can interact with him. I mean, what kind of fight will it be if Froch and Groves don’t go at it verbally in the run up to the fight?

Groves says he doesn’t care about Froch having shoved him when the two of them met recently at Wembley Stadium. However, Groves is hoping that Froch doesn’t snap mentally and start throwing punches when he gets close. Groves said that if Froch resorts to throwing punches, he’d deck him. He’s not going to let Froch nail him with punches if he resorts to that in response to Groves talking to him up close.

Yes, hopefully Froch doesn’t blow a rod and start throwing shots at Groves during their face to face meetings, because it would be such a pity for the fight to be called off due to an injury of some sort for either fighter. The whole thing about the shoving is still a nothing thing right now, but if Froch takes it to the next level by cold cocking Groves without warning, then it’ll be a definite problem.

Where Groves is coming from in this is that he was shoved without warning by Froch in their meeting at Wembley Stadium. Froch didn’t tell him that he was going to shove him, and he didn’t warn Groves to put up his guard to get ready for the shove ahead of time. I mean, there are certain norms for press conferences, and it usually doesn’t get to the shoving stage until the final face off at the weigh-ins the day before the fight. With Froch already starting the shoving during the first meeting with Groves, it’s a whole new thing. It’s understandable why Groves might be concerned whether Froch will take it to the next level and start slugging when the two of them come face to face the next time. If it’s going to get to the state, then I say that both fighters should come to their meetings with gloves on and head gear in case the punches start flying.
