By Jim Dower: #6 WBC heavyweight contender Manuel Charr (26-1, 15 KO’s) stayed alive for an eventual world title shot by beating 34-year-old journeyman Kevin “Kingpin” Johnson (29-6-1 14 KO’s) by a controversial 10 round unanimous decision on Saturday night at the Telekom Dome, Bonn, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany. The final judges’ scores were 97-93, 97-93, and 97-93, all for the 29-year-old Charr.

Charr was too busy for Johnson. Johnson fought well in the first three rounds when he was landing some good shots every now and then, but he had problems in working hard for the full three minutes of every round and this enabled Charr to to win rounds just based on activity alone rather than talent. Johnson looked like the better fighter in the ring, but his stamina was poor. It’s unclear whether he trained hard for this fight or not, because he could have done a number on Charr if he had put in the effort to throw enough punches.

The loss is Johnson’s fourth in his last five fights, and the defeats have all come within the last two years. Johnson has seen his once promising career turned into shambles with one defeat after another.

For Charr, this was his fifth straight victory since his 4th round stoppage loss to former WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko in 2012. All of Charr’s opponents since the loss to Vitali have been in the similar class as Kevin Johnson talent-wise. Charr doesn’t seem interested in taking any serious challengers, and the WBC isn’t forcing the issue because they’re pushing him up the rankings despite his lack of quality opposition.

You can expect that Charr will eventually get a shot at the WBC title. The only question is whether the WBC will have him fight for the mandatory spot in a year or two or if he’ll simply way for one of the champions to pick him out.

“I knew I had to knock him out but we are talking about a world rated fighter who is a really tough guy”, said Johnson after the fight. “I hit him with a couple of good shots but he kept moving forward. I couldn’t stop him. It’s as simple as that. And we all know that you have to knock out your opponent twice to get a decision win on the road. That’s what I tried to do. But I couldn’t get it done. I have to give my respect to Manuel and his team. They did a great job. And he is a hell of a fighter. He connected with some good shots as well. It was give and take. Congrats to him for his victory.”

Johnson came into the fight with the wrong approach, as he wasn’t going to out-box Charr, and he wasn’t a ton of time by not letting his hands go the way he needed to in order to get the win.
