Can Pacquiao beat Mayweather now?

pac012345By Bradley Dee: Coming from a huge fan of Manny Pacquiao, Manny likely cannot beat Floyd Mayweather Jr at this stage in his career. I watched his fight against former WBO welterweight champion Timothy Bradley II last night, and I feel that Pacquiao doesn’t have the stamina needed to produce a victory against Floyd at this point.

About 4-5 years ago, I would have given Pacquiao the victory over Mayweather, and even earlier in his career, such as when he fought Marco Antonio Barrera, I feel he would have defeated Mayweather by unanimous decision. He was simply a buzz saw of endless energy at that point in his career. He could punch every minute of every round for 12 straight rounds, proven against Barrera and Erik Morales and Juan Manuel Marquez.

The Pacquiao we saw in the second Tim Bradley fight fought in spurts, and took several rounds off, and was well on his way to losing a decision until Bradley stopped fighting and took his feet off the gas in the 6th round. There were times for over 20 seconds when he didn’t throw a punch.

Not to take away from his performance, but the win was based more on what Tim Bradley could not do for 12 rounds than what Pac did for 12 rounds. On the flip side, Pac beat a pound for pound “undefeated” fighter in Bradley and has the belt again.

For Pacquiao to beat Mayweather, he would have to be the Pacquiao of old. He promised to be just that in his second fight with Bradley, but that didn’t happen. He never really badly hurt Bradley.

For this fight to happen from this point on in my opinion doesn’t do his legacy the justice it deserves. The fight should have happened a long time ago. Now, fighting Mayweather, he’s taking a knife to a gunfight. I just don’t believe he can produce the kind of performance that he used to be able to produce.
