Can Maidana KO Mayweather?

mayweather565By Yannis Mihanos: Marcos “El Chino” Maidana (35-3, 31 KO’s) is the heavy hitter from Argentina. Lately we have seen many heavy hitters coming from this country such as Lucas Matthysse. Maidana has been fighting well of late, and has knocked out his last four opponent since his loss to Devon Alexander in 2012.

By beating convincingly Adrien “The Problem” Broner last December, the win has brought Maidana to where all fighters dream to reach one day to be in the ring against the number 1 pound for pound king of boxing Floyd Mayweather Jr.(45-0, 26 KO’s) on May 3rd at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

This by far is Maidana’s greatest challenge. But what now? Can Maidana knockout Mayweather and shock the world? I don’t remember ever seeing Mayweather hitting the canvas in the past, because he is so defense oriented that his opponents finding it extremely difficult not only to knock him out but even to hit him.

Mayweather has mastered the art of defense thanks to his uncle Roger Mayweather and dad Floyd Mayweather Sr. Other than in his first fight against Jose Luis Castillo, no opponent in the ring has ever been so close on points with Mayweather Jr.

Mayweather is always ahead on points in his fights, and his opposition are frequently put in the position to where they need a knockout to win. Mayweather has yet to taste defeat no matter which tactic his opponents try.

On May 3d this scenario will likely get repeated with Maidana far behind on points late in the fight needing a knockout to win. Maidana’s trainer Robert Garcia will no doubt give Maidana the command to shoot for a KO against Mayweather.
Maidana shouldn’t wait for the later rounds to go for a knockout. He needs to go for a knockout from the start of the fight.

Maidana has the power to knockout any fighter in the sport, and he’s proved it in the past with a number of knockouts. The problem is that Mayweather is expecting it too. He knows Maidana will be looking for a knockout and he’ll be ready for him.
Sergio Martinez recently on an interview described the hands of Maidana as “2 bricks.” He is not very far from reality. Maidana is definitely a very heavy hitter.
Mayweather’s last two opponents, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero, didn’t have the same kinds of weapons that Maidana has, because they fight with a different style.
Maidana has no chance of stealing a point’s victory over Mayweather on May 3rd. That’s a joke. Instead, he must trying to use his heavy hands for one purpose only and that’s to knock Mayweather out. That is the only chance he’s got, and that’s the only chance he will get.
