Broner still eager for rematch against Marcos Maidana

broner533By Allan Fox: Adrien Broner (27-1, 22 KO’s) still wants to fight a rematch against Marcos Maidana, even though Broner has now moved down to the light welterweight division and is campaigning as a 140lb fighter now. Broner, 24, says he’s exercised his rematch clause for the Maidana fight, and he still intends on fighting him in the near future at some point.

Broner still isn’t saying when precisely that he’ll be looking to get Maidana back in the ring, but you have to assume that it won’t be anytime soon given that Broner is being guided by his adviser Al Haymon.

“I’d like to fight Maidana on Sunday,” Broner said last Saturday night to Showtime. “As you probably already heard, I exercised my rematch clause and he said he was having a baby. At the end of the day he can have 10 babies, he’s still got to fight Adrien Broner.”

It makes for good sound bites to have Broner saying he wants the Maidana rematch, but the more likely reality is that fans will seeing the two continue to go in different directions. Maidana will very likely get soundly beaten by Broner’s “big brother” Floyd Mayweather Jr. on May 3rd, and Maidana’s WBA welterweight title will be gone. A rematch between Broner and Maidana will lose all meaning once Maidana is beaten by Mayweather and no longer has the WBA title in his possession.

Broner would end up looking like someone picking from Mayweather’s leftovers if he was to try and use his rematch clause to force a second fight with Maidana at that point. There would no upside for Broner in fighting Maidana with him coming off of a loss to Mayweather, and if Broner were to lose a second time to Maidana under those conditions, it would be a major blow to his career. Haymon won’t be able to rebuild Broner’s career if he keeps losing to Maidana left and right.

Broner also said that he wanted a rematch against Paulie Malignaggi, who Broner barely beat last year. However, a rematch against Malignaggi now is another pointless fight given Malignaggi’s 4th round TKO loss to IBF welterweight champion Shawn Porter last Saturday night.

Broner would be better off facing Porter for his IBF title rather than taking on Malignaggi. But Porter would be a very tough fight for Broner due to him having an aggressive fighting style very similar to Maidana. Unless Broner learns how to use lateral movement to avoid the all-out assaults that Porter would be making on him, he would be doomed to take another loss if that fight were to happen.
