Broner: I’ll be fighting for a world title at 140 real soon

broner444442By Dan Ambrose: Adrien Broner (27-1, 22 KO’s) says he expects to get a world title shot real soon in the near future, as he’s going to be looking to capture his 4th division world title in his new weight class at 140. Broner isn’t saying which belt he’ll be going after, but it appears that he’s expecting WBA/WBC 140lb champion Danny Garcia to vacate his titles and move up to welterweight.

“I will be trying to make history. I don’t know if it’s been done before. I’ll be a four-time world champion in four division weight classes by the time I’m 24. Once you get the status that I am in boxing, I can go to any weight class right now and fight for a world title. I got the ability to do that. I know I will be fighting for a world title at 140 real soon.”

The reason why Broner can move up or down in weight and immediately fight for world titles is because a lot of the champions need a popular fighter like Broner to make a big fight, and they’re obviously not going to turn down a fighter as popular as him when they know they can get a big payday in defending their titles against him.

Broner is 24 right now, so for him to get a world title before he turns 25 on July 28th, he’s going to have to get an immediate title shot scheduled after his May 3rd stay busy fight against little 5’5″ Carlos Molina on the Floyd Mayweather Jr – Marcos Maidana card at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

If Broner is counting on Garcia vacating by that time then he’s going to be disappointed, because Garcia says he wants to make another title defense of his WBA and WBC 140lb titles. Garcia’s father Angel Garcia doesn’t want him to move up in weight at all. He thinks he’s fine at 140, as long as he can still make the weight class. It’s not a given that Garcia will move up in weight to the 147lb division, because his dad has a lot of pull with him.

Broner’s best bet for a world title shot by July is for him to take on IBF light welterweight champion Lamont Peterson, who Broner has been sparring with lately. Broner hinted that he and Peterson have had some fierce sparring sessions with one another. Broner said this about sparring with Peterson: “It gets hectic in the gym. We’re brothers outside of the ring but in that ring, hey, if you don’t come ready to strap up and go to war, you’re gonna get beat up pretty bad in there. We spar all the time. Everybody spars.”

The way that Broner mentioned the sparring sessions with Peterson, it gives one the impression that Peterson has been giving him a lot of problems during those sparring sessions with his body punching and high work rate. I wouldn’t be surprised if Peterson has been getting the better of Broner in sparring.

If Broner is going to fight anyone for a world title at 140 before his 25th birthday in July, it’s going to have to be Peterson. Garcia isn’t going to fight him next, and he probably won’t even vacate if his father has anything to say about it. In a fight between Peterson and Broner, I’d favor Peterson by a wide margin. I think he’s a better fighter than Broner by far.
