Adrien Broner talks about Molina fight

broner9991By Dan Ambrose: Adrien Broner (27-1, 22 KO’s) revealed today in the media conference call that he expects one of the light welterweight titles to open up shortly. Broner didn’t say that he’ll go after the belt, but it seems very likely that he will. The title he’s talking about is the WBC 140lb belt held by WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia, who said recently that he plans on moving up in weight to the welterweight division. The only way that Garcia doesn’t take that move is if his adviser Al Haymon recommends that he stay at 140.

Broner has a tune-up fight against Carlos Molina (17-1-1, 7 KO’s) on the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Marcos Maidana fight card on May 3rd. It’ll give Broner a chance to be seen on the same card as the guy that just easily beat him last December in Maidana. Broner had talked about wanting to try and avenge the loss, but it looks like he may have changed his mind about the wisdom of attempting that.

“At the end of the day I’m going to do what will make Adrien Broner happy. I”ll showcase my talents, speed and power on May 3. It’s not a problem at all for me [moving down to 140]. It is my natural weight class. We know that a world title at 140lbs is on the way, but I’ve got to take it one step at a time. After this fight everyone will see that I’m still ‘The Problem.’ I can make the best fighter look like the worst fighter when I’m on my A-game. I’m training hard for May 3, the loss I took would probably break anyone else but not me, I’m strong physically & mentally. I don’t take any boxer lightly, I respect all boxer; it takes a lot to get into that squared circle. Carlos Molina is a hell of a fighter, I don’t take any boxer lightly. I just want him on his A-game May 3rd. I’m still getting a heck of a check May 3, I don’t care that I’m on Maidana’s undercard, side-card or over-card. If you expect a humbled Adrien Broner you’ll find the same Broner. I’m still fun, flashy, fly. Hi everybody what’s happening, I’m happy Carlos Molina took this fight but he’s going to lose.”

A win for Broner over Molina in this fight will likely put Broner in position to fight for the WBC title whether Danny Garcia gives up the title or not. Garcia would be a very difficult fight for Broner, because he’d have to raise his game from his last performance against Maidana. Broner wouldn’t beat a fighter like Garcia by standing stationary and looking to throw one punch at a time. That would be a recipe for disaster if Broner were to do that.
