Wladimir Klitchsko has Joe Louis in his sights

wladimir345By Bradley Dee: What significant event happened almost 10 years ago in Heavyweight Boxing? On April 10th, 2004, heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (61-3, 51 KO’s) lost in a defeat to Lamon Brewster. Since then, he has “forgotten” how to lose. His mastery of ring generalship, footwork, and the ability to always have his opponent in the perfect position, has negated any impacts to his “questionable” jaw for a very, very long time.

Notice the questionable is in quotes, because Klitschko has never, ever been knocked out cold, only TKO’d in the ring. As a matter of fact when he fought Corrie Sanders, he was still getting up when the referee waved it off. In the Brewster fight, his last loss, Klitschko evidently punched himself completely out. Lamon was just relentless, keeping the pressure on, even after taking a beating for some 4 odd rounds. I think Brewster saw that Klitschko was beginning to tire and when that was evident, he found a second wind and began putting the pressure on that got him the TKO in a very strange stoppage where Klitschko was helped to his feet in between rounds.

Something else very significant to be mentioned, Klitschko is also the second longest reigning heavyweight champion ever, starting at 22 April, 2006, with fifteen title defenses. Five more defenses and he ties Larry Holmes. Ten more and he ties Joe Lewis. Should Wlad make it almost 4 more years as champ, he would pass up Joe Lewis for the longest ever reigning champion. He already passed Larry Holmes in time reigning but not in total defenses.

We could very well see heavyweight history in the making in the next few years unless something significant changes in the division, and Wlad is at his peak now, and wanting to unify the WBC as well. At this point I don’t see any challengers on the horizon that look to be a threat and realistically fighting 2-3 times a year, we could see Klitschko surpass Joe Louis as the longest ever reigning heavyweight champion of the world.
